Steven Moffat to replace Russell T. Davies on Doctor Who
Martin Anderson
Rejoice! The esteemed writer of Blink is finally to helm Doctor Who in 2010...
Very good news for the legions of Steven Moffat fans (including myself) who have been shuffling about anxiously waiting for the announcement that he will take over the show - TODAY IS THE DAY!
The Guardian website has just reported that the esteemed writer of Blink will become the lead writer and executive producer of the Beeb's highly acclaimed ratings magnet after the 'interstitial series' of Doctor Who - which will consist of three extended stories following the Christmas special - concludes in 2009.
Russell T. Davies, whose fourth and final complete series is now at the halfway stage on BBC1 on Saturdays, said: "It's been a delight and an honour working with Steven, and I can't wait to see where his extraordinary imagination takes the Doctor. Best of all, I get to be a viewer again, watching on a Saturday night!"
Jane Tranter, the BBC's fiction controller commented: "The Tardis couldn't be in safer hands. Steven's talents on both Doctor Who and beyond are well known. He is a writer of glittering brilliance, comedy and depth, with an extraordinary imagination and a unique voice. Steven has a wonderful mix of being a committed Doctor Who fan and a true artist, and his plans for the next series are totally thrilling."
We can't all do our best work all the time, and it will doubtless be a pitted path for Moffat, of whom expectations are almost absurdly high - but in this writer's opinion, this is the best news for Who fans since the announcement of the show's return nearly five years ago.

Re: Steven Moffat to replace Russell T. Davies on Doctor WhoExcellent, excellent news. I just hope writing so many episodes doesn't dilute him - but the thought of getting at least four episodes a year from him makes me giddy, as does the idea of his superb grasp of narrative structure being responsible for mapping out the entire series...
Re: Steven Moffat to replace Russell T. Davies on Doctor WhoCongratulations Steven Moffat. I think its a shame though that a small but vocal minority of 'fans' have treated the news as some sort of personal victory. One post read yesterday: "Yay! We did it! R.T.D.'s gone! Now let's get rid of Tennant!". Like him or hate him, Davies has helped make the show a hit all over again, and it seems mean spirited to deny him his share of the credit. He, Julie Gardner and Mal Young will not easily be forgotten.
Re: Steven Moffat to replace Russell T. Davies on Doctor WhoFantatic news - Steven Moffat has written some of the best Who stories of the new serie and it will be interesting to see where he will go from here. Kudos to Russell T Davies though for bringing back the legacy of Who and I feel that the show is in safe hands as the Torch (wood) of Who is passed onto creative and capable hands. And speaking of Torchwood there are rumours online Torchwood is also coming back with a bit of a twist with Martha and possibly Mickey joining full time.. hmmmm let the rumours begin |
