Torchwood season 4: new title, writers, and more

Simon Brew

Russell T Davies talks more about Torchwood’s upcoming season 4, while details of which writers are involved start to emerge too…

Published on Aug 9, 2010

In the build-up to the long-awaited (well, it feels like it) fourth season of Torchwood going into production this coming January, Russell T Davies has been talking to US reporters about what we can expect from the show. We already know that Davies has planned to take the show into much darker territory, following the lead set by Torchwood: Children Of Earth, and he's expanded a little on that in his latest natter.

Firstly, the show is going to be called Torchwood: The New World this time around, and it's going to be a self-contained season of 10 episodes. Thus, while it'll be respecting the canon of Torchwood, once more, this is going to be a season dedicated to telling one big story.

Furthermore, it's been confirmed that a pair of new characters are joining Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen this time round. They are Rex Matheson, a CIA agent, and Ester Katusi, who will be playing an analyst. We've no idea yet who's going to be playing either of them, but, rest assured, we'll be submitting our showreel.

Furthermore, Davies has spoken about the opportunity being on a cable network in the States allows in terms of pushing things in the show. He told Airlock Alpha, "I've always had loose standards and practices. If the story demands intimacy or savagery, we will go there absolutely. [But] there's nothing better than a great big global thriller that stops for a sex scene - it's probably hard to make that happen in a thriller."

It's also been revealed that helping on the writing side of things will be John Shiban, Jane Espenson and Doris Egan. Shiban is a veteran of The X-Files, and has the likes of Star Trek: Enterprise and Breaking Bad on his resume. Espenson, meanwhile, has the likes of Battlestar Galactica, Caprica and Buffy The Vampire Slayer to her name. Egan, meanwhile, has penned episodes of Dark Angel and Tru Calling.

Also returning to the writing team is John Fay (who penned a couple of episodes of Children Of Earth).

Torchwood: The New World will start screening next summer and you can read more here.

It sounds absolutely dreadful. Moving it to America really is jumping the shark. And I don't have much faith in RTD's ability to write the thing if he plans to just crowbar sex scenes in there.

People use 'Jumping the Shark' way too often. Do you even know what it means?

I don't think RTD will be shoehorning in sex scenes without at least half a reason -- remember, this is the man who mandated his version of Casanova have no nudity because it would be distracting.

I dunno it sounds interesting to me, and I very much doubt he plans to 'crowbar' in a sex scene... if the show is well written then putting sex into it shouldn't be that much of an issue if they decide to do it. Personally I will wait to see what they produce before I start to slag it off... who knows it might actually be really good.

@Interference Yes I do know what it means. It refers to the point where a TV programme reaches its peak and goes downhill. Usually categorised by things such as absurd storylines, unlikely characterisation, recasting certain roles, or in this case, changing the location. The etymology of the phrase is an episode of Happy Days where Fonzie jumps over a shark on water skis.

@rassilon - Usually the term 'jumping the shark' is applied AFTER the show has been seen (nevermind the fact the 4th season hasn't even been written let alone made yet). To say that the show has already jumped the shark by moving location is just daft...

I'll watch it just because I'm curious as to what this 'crowbar sex-scene' will be like, sounds painful

John Shiban is good news. Jane Espenson is brilliant news. Doris Egan is bad news.

Though I risk sounding like a teenaged boy in the throws of puberty, I have to ask... Does this mean we'll see Eve Myles with her kit off? Had to be asked.

I'm probably more likely to give it a watch if Jane Espenson is one of the writers - am still dubious about the whole move though.

Personally I can't wait to see the show on Starz. I am a huge fan of Spartacus: Blood and Sand and that is a fantastic Starz exclusive. I think that it will give the writers the ability to be uninhibited in their writing and I think like with Spartacus it could be a really fun experience seeing this show on Starz. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. I for one can't wait!

People, can you say sarcasm? RTD will not randomly stick a sex scene into the mix for no reason, especially if it will interfere with the story. I really dislike the term jumping the shark and the false metaphor -as Gary Marshall has said a number of times, they were on for years after that episode and won a few Emmys. He wished that more of his shows jumped a shark. That being said, I am wary of Torchwood becoming a Starz product and moving to the US. I hope the franchise can survive the change and the Buffification and X-filization that will take place. I am a fan because it was not those shows and it was smart. When it Torchwood hits our shores not so sure it will stay that way for such a mass audience.

I'm very excited that they will be playing it on Starz and moving it to America. Extremely wary, but excited none the less. The main concern on mine is that it won't be accepted in the same way here in the states, if at all. I can only imagine all the crap that will be said between both the states and UK. Honestly, as long as RTD is still there, I don't care how many sex scenes he throws in. Doctor Who has fallen pretty flat without him. I'm so glad that Espenson is there as a writer. It was a fantasy of mine to have Buffy writers and Torchwood/DW writers to UNITE.

To the comment about the show becoming more riskier because it's on starz. You need to remember that this show will still appear on BBC1 before it airs in the states. There are certain rules that will prevent things like crowbarred sex scenes and or full frontal nudity. While in the US on Starz they could get away with some things, they aren't going to get away with a lot of the BBC even if they have mellowed somewhat. The reality is RTD and co will make this show as if it is for the BBC or they will loose a huge market in the UK if the BBC refuse to air it. Remember the BBC are still the ones producing this for Starz in the US. So don't get too over excited, the BBC are not as liberated as the cable network is in the US

RTD has said they have to make this for broadcast for the BBC beyond the 9pm watershed. Can't see it being any different to what we've seen before. Yes it's good to see a new location, I mean seriously most of us in the UK are sick the back teeth of seeing the exact same places time and again either in Torchwood or on Doctor Who. However in the US they have a dreadful track record of trying to convert UK television shows, and I am not convinced this is going to be as big a hit as it is in the UK. Lots of us here in the UK hate the BBC, but I don't think many other networks could do the excellent job they do..imagine if Merlin was to be recast in the US...instant failure. I hope I am wrong but I can see this lasting 1 season and the BBC taking back the license..even if it gets that far. Most people don't get why this show has to move to the US. Blame John Barrowman for this mess..he wants to go back to the US the option was there for him to leave..which would have probably have meant the end of torchwood, the bbc took the option up of selling internation rights to film overseas in the US to satisfy Barrowman and to keep him tied to the series.

RCLoveland - you say Doctor has fallen pretty flat without RTD. I think you'll find that Doctor Who's 5th season has the highest ratings on the BBC than all of the previous 4 season's combined. I wouldn't call that pretty flat. After just the 3rd episode the BBC announced another 3 seasons worth of Doctor who, because of the strong numbers. You might not like the new doctor and the writing style of Moffat, but the truth is, the strongest shows on the series was written by moffat. So it was natural for him to take over. I kind of miss Dave Tennant but I still see him on BBC 1 drama's and the odd occasiona BBC documentaries and still listen to him on BBC Radio 7 on his drama. So for me he is still there. I also didn't like Matt Smith, but he grows on you if you can get past the first 5 episodes. RTD leaving Who was a big blessing to the show, besides doctor who is a children's show and the last thing kids need rammed down their throats is gay references..its much much stronger without him. Dave Tennant "You would not believe the amount of Gay references where forced into the scripts under Russel"
