Russell T Davies on “very dark” Torchwood series 4

Simon Brew

As Russell T Davies confirms he’s writing at least the opening episode for Torchwood’s fourth series, he also reveals how dark he’s looking to take things…

Published on Jul 28, 2010

Russell T Davies has been talking just a little bit more about the now-in-development fourth series of Torchwood, which is being put together thanks to a deal between the BBC and American cable network Starz. Between them, they've given the greenlight for ten episodes, and Davies has been telling SFX what he plans to do with them.

The good news is that he looks to be continuing the tone set by the superb Torchwood: Children Of Earth. He told SFX, "Actually, this story is also very dark. I think with that, Torchwood found its feet. People found something very compelling and very chilling about it ... I thought it was fascinating and challenging what he did there, but hard - it was so hard. I do think with the whole of Children Of Earth we found a new heartland for Torchwood."

Davies went on to explain how he's pitching the series to its new audience on Starz.

"For faithful viewers you'll see the same people in the same world, following on. Though it also starts from scratch, because there's a brand new Starz audience there sitting waiting to be scooped up, new viewers coming to it. But I restarted Doctor Who in 2005 from scratch, so I know what I'm doing. I did it with Children Of Earth, actually - that practically tripled Torchwood's audience, and no one said to me that they were lost. So it's a new starting point and yet... as a faithful viewer you do get that awful feeling when something reboots or revamps that you're not comfortable anymore, and there's none of that. It's still Gwen, it's still Jack, and hopefully more."

Torchwood series 4 will screen in the summer of 2011.

I really wish creators / directors / writers would stop using this meaningless descriptor 'dark'. It's a catch-all phrase for being all and edgy and hip and a way of distancing it from previous iterations of the story.

Agreed!. The word "dark" gets thrown about WAY TOO MUCH nowadays and besides, killing your own grandson is pretty damn dark IMHO.......

Actually CoE was a bit too dark for my tast. Even though it was much better written (tighter and more to the point), I liked the silly fluffyness the series had before... I hope there will still be lots of humour and a little less deaths!

Children Of Earth was a great example of going `darker' but not too dark and retaing the human element... just like the the superb SJA adventures manges to be lighter in tone than TW or DW but maintain it's intelligence and thrills. Really looking forward to series 4 of both of them

Torchwood does nothing for me... Maybe this series will.

Considering CoE is about as low on my DVDs to buy list as it's physically possible to get without being off it, I fear it will be a while before I buy s4. I will, however, at least give it a shot when it broadcasts.

"For faithful viewers you'll see the same people in the same world, following on." No we won't. Everything familiar was destroyed in CoE. "as a faithful viewer you do get that awful feeling when something reboots or revamps that you're not comfortable anymore, and there's none of that. It's still Gwen, it's still Jack, and hopefully more." Oh wrong again, I am very uncomfortable with the "revamp" of CoE. Gwen and Jack were never my favorite characters, I found the others much more interesting. I was willing to give the new series a chance but if it's really continuing in the vein of CoE then I probably won't be watching any more.

Personally I though CoE was the best thing Davies has written. I had only seen a handful or Torchwood episodes before and wasn't really taken with it. However, CoE went places I never expected and had a real operatic feel to it. Thankfully didn't rely on some Deus Ex Machina to sort things out. So I'm quietly optimistic about this series...

"Thankfully didn't rely on some Deus Ex Machina to sort things out." Strictly speaking your right as there were clues to the solution, so hence not DeM. (Another term way overused, but never mind.) However it came very close to that, effectively using something in a different way to achieve the end. (I left that vague in case anyone reading this is yet to read this.) Don't get me wrong, I really liked Children of Earth, but I did find the ending somewhat weak and didn't altogether add up. Terrific episodes otherwise though, and I welcome more Torchwood. Not sure of this change in direction with the States though.

I agree with SpiritMuse, the most interesting characters have been killed off. Jack was fun when the show was lighter but doesn't seem to fit so well into a 'dark' theme. Gwen was always rather annoying. The show loses its balance without humour, and Ianto provided the best of that.

I found Ianto, and Torchwood, thoroughly irritating until CoE, when it seemed the writers realised that 'adult' drama means adult themes, done in an adult way. Roll on S4 if they maintain that ethos.

I quite enjoyed the first two series of Torchwood, but CoE was miles ahead of both of these. The 'darker' elements of the show suited Torchwood far more than it did on Doctor Who, wasn't that the reason the spin-off was created? Though, to be honest, Doct Who itself could go darker, as most people's favourite episodes of new Who seem to be more horror than comedy orientated.

Loved but was devastated by CoE. Boy, was it ever well done, though the emotional cost, both for the world of Torchwood & myself, still sit badly with me after more than a year. So I do believe Davies simply went too far with CoE in the end and the consequences over time will be felt, but I'll be tuning into Series 4 'cuz I have hope.
