Steven Moffat on what to expect in Doctor Who series 6

Simon Brew

What are the two mysteries that we can expect to be resolved in Doctor Who’s next series?

Published on Jun 30, 2010

As we continue to wrap our heads around last weekend's Doctor Who finale, The Big Bang, inevitably quite a lot of attention - given the loose threads that were deliberately left dangling - has turned to what's going to happen in the sixth series of the revived Doctor Who.

Show boss Steven Moffat has been answering that very question, telling Doctor Who Confidential that two of the big story mysteries will be resolved.

"What is that, who is that, who are the silence, what's coming?" teased Moffat. "The whole point of the silence is next series. Also, River Song ... who is she really? That's what we're going to find out next year," he said.

Also, Steven Moffat has revealed to Digital Spy just how far into planning series six he is. "Not far enough, I think is the answer to that!" he told the site. "I've got lots of plans - plans are not nearly as useful as scripts, I find - so I'd like to have more scripts and fewer plans. We're not quite as ahead of the game as we were last time. But it's fine."

It's unclear yet how many episodes of series six Moffat himself will be writing, but that should become clear in the months ahead, along with the identity of some of the other scribes working on the next series of the show.

I believe in the Moff! And my crappy theory is: the rebooted universe has allowed the Time Lords to return. Hence the silence has fallen.

I love how we've all started looking for clues EVERYWHERE. Right down to the birds chirping in the VERY FIRST EPISODE, when the Dr. wakes up, handcuffed to the radiator. The Moff's truly a writer of incredible depth and subtlety. We couldn't be in better hands. :)

What I want to know is will the rst of the universe remember the Doctor? I hope not, I'm sick of the whole "look me up, oh and now you're scared of me" approach. Clever the first time but I'd quite like the monsters to be not so frightened of our good Doctor any more.

Interesting how the Moff said "Who are the silence?" instead of "what is the silence?" suggesting The Silence are a species/set of beings rather than an event, which is what I felt was alluded to with the phrase "silence will fall". Goddamn that guy is a tease! @FonceFalooda - Clues EVERYWHERE...every little thing.

i agree with @library_guy that he said "who" instead of "what". makes it interesting, and i'm looking forward to what the Moff and other writers will come up with for next year :D

I just hope that we get some proper endings next series. These "fairy tale" endings this series have been complete crap. While there have been some good ideas this series, the execution of those ideas has been very weak indeed. After having one series under his belt, let's hope Mr. Moffat gets more on top of things next year.

Consistency Steven, consistency. Get that right throughout the next season and I'll buy everyone in the ratings figures a drink. The bar was raised with the final two episodes in this current series so expectations are high...

"Who" are the silence? That's interesting... then again, that could also be a trick to trow us off. To make us think he gave us a hint while it's really a red herring. It does make me curious though, which is probably exactly the point.

"Who are the Silence?" Ooooh... I'm all goose-pimply now! When does Series 6 start airing? When? When?!

The alliance has been fed false information -- that the Doctor (our timeline Doctor, anyway) is about to unleash the end of the universe. And that very conveniently leads to him being entombed in the only device that allows him to survive. WHO fed the Alliance that false information? A later time-crossing Doctor?

"The whole point of the silence is next series. Also, River Song ... who is she really" What if those aren't two distinct story arcs but one and the same? After all, when she first appeared there was SILENCE in the library. Coincidence? Maybe. But what if he has been seeding this since series 4.....

River's real identity is going to be very big indeed. Firstly because I feel that Moffat will want to pull a rug out from under the most popular "she's the Doctor's wife but she kills him!" theories. Secondly because it's going to affect all the stories River's been in, give them a different spin. So that'll be big, like I say.

Why can't you wait? what has gaimen done on TV? Neverwhere which distinctly MEH and one B5 episode which certainly didn't stand out either, of the 3 "star" writers, Fry, Curtis and Gaimen I was far more interested in the first 2...

Aha! So have they been saying "The Silents will fall", rather than "silence", i.e. the Silent Ones. Wonder who they are then.

I'm really looking forward to seeing series 6. River's identity is a very big mystery. She surely isn't a normal person. Why did she want to fall in the Crack in Flesh and Stone. It was stated clearly that in order to close a crack a very complicated space-time event must be consummed by it. River isn't idiot to suggest falling in it without being a complicated space-time event. "Who are the silence", hm sounds really really nice. BTW anyone want the Valeyard to return?

is it just me or is anyone else wondering what the crystals that appeared on the tardis screen in Amys Choice are as they mysteriously appeared at the end of the show

The valeyard will be back. They would have to rewrite the history of the show not to include him at some point. My guess is the dream lord is a preview of the valeyard pre having a body of his own.

It's interesting that here in the States, there's a lot less attention on writers for popular tv shows. I mean, the writers are mentioned, especially with concern to wild twists or gaping plot holes or especially cheesy lines, but know one knows their names or goes , "Oh man, I'm excited, so-and-so wrote tonight's episode of NCIS!" They're just kind of some faceless entity, always referred to as "The writers", almost never by name. For Doctor Who and other British shows, however, the writers are known and referred to by name, and are rightly seen as one of, if not THE most important people as far as episode quality is concerned.
