Neil Gaiman on writing his Doctor Who episode

Versatile writer Neil Gaiman, whose notable work includes The Sandman comics, and the fantasy horror novel Coraline, has been talking a bit more about his script for Doctor Who's sixth series, which is scheduled to air in 2011.

"I don't know what it's like to be God - obviously," Gaiman said in an interview with the BBC. "Until that very first moment when you get to sit down and type the words in your script: INTERIOR. TARDIS.

"Suddenly I got a very good idea of what it must feel like. I went: 'I'm writing it now this scene in the Tardis. I'm writing it!' And that was amazing, it was wonderful."

Over on Twitter, Gaiman posted a picture of himself and Steven Moffat as they sat down in Cardiff for a read-through of Gaiman's work, though the writer has cunningly obscured the episode's title with a careful positioning of his hand.

"It's going to be shooting in August and we were going through it and figuring out ways that money could be saved and ways we could have some things happen faster," Gaiman added. "It was a little bit flabby."

The involvement of a writer of Gaiman's calibre has been greeted with understandable enthusiasm on Twitter, with comments such as "I don't know if I can handle this awesomeness" and "This is just cruel. Make it 2011 already!" aptly summing up the fan reaction.

If we hear any further developments on this, particularly if we spot a picture where Mr. Gaiman hasn't obscured the episode title, we'll be sure to let you know.

I love Neil Gaiman's work (The Sandman is one of the greatest stories EVER in my very humble opinion)so can't wait to see what he does with Doctor Who. I know Neil is a big fan so I am sure it will be great. Wasn't it reported somewhere that the title for his episode was "The House of Dreams" or something very similar?

Long since changed the title now though. Mind you, given certain revelations regarding a certain dream lord and said changed title, is anybody else thinking that yet more pollen'll get into the rotors?

If you've never read it, look out Gaiman's preface to Paul McAuley's Doctor Who novella, Eye of the Tyger. It's the most eloquent eulogy to the series that I've ever read. In addition, he acknolwedges Kim Newman's remark that Neverwhere probably owes its existence to the old Troughton adventure, Web of Fear.

Don't forget about Good Omens, which was co-authored with Terry Pratchett. Very funny and very well done. I remember not being able to do anything else until I finished it.

The Moffat/gaiman collaboration is one I've been looking forward to as far back as series one of new Doctor Who (I've always heavily suspected that Moffat "borrowed" The main plot strand and resolution of The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances from Gaiman's Hellblazer issue) so am uber excited for this one!!

If they are shooting in August, doesn't that mean it is going to be the Christmas Special ??

Moffatt said he was writing the special a while back, and I've never heard of any Christmas special not going to the head writer of the time - they shoot 14 eps on a 13 ep schedule (hence the Doctor/Companion-lite eps since series 2 - they got away with it on 1 because they didn't know they'd get a Christmas special), and as far as I'm aware they've wrapped shooting on this series run, which would imply they've shot the special. Besides, with all the post-production (editing, sound, SFX and all that jazz) they usually tend to start shooting early in order to get it done in time. I recall hearing on the commentaries for S4 that they only got the final edit in on the Sontaran 2 parter about a month before it aired.
