What’s happened to Torchwood series 4?

Simon Brew

Torchwood: Children Of Earth was one of the massive TV successes of 2009. So why is there still no news on Torchwood series 4?

Published on Mar 18, 2010

It's been three quarters of a year now since the BBC screened the third series of Torchwood, Children Of Earth, across five subsequent nights last summer. It was a sizeable gamble for the show, too, which was transferring to BBC One for the first time. John Barrowman, at the time, argued that the price for switching to One was that the series was truncated down to five episodes in total, but the decision to screen them all across five days was a bold one. Especially for a science fiction show that many still regarded as a Doctor Who spin-off with swearing and stuff in it.

That week last year, though, made for some exhilarating television, and also saw the team behind Torchwood lift the show to its highest levels to date. It was an utterly compelling five nights of drama that proved to be a sizeable critical and commercial success. So much so that more shows have now been scheduled in the same way since. You can put part of the that down to Children Of Earth.

It can't have been just us though that, even appreciating we were in the middle of a year of massive cost cutting, thought the fourth series of Torchwood was a foregone conclusion. After all, what more did the show need to do? It'd dragged millions of viewers to the BBC in the midst of summer, it'd sold lots of DVDs, and it had answers to many questions about how dark the show could go without losing an audience.

Even if you were one of the Children Of Earth dissenters, it was surely nonetheless refreshing to see a show of its ilk and content - and that penultimate episode remains burned into our retinas - on BBC One on a weekday evening.

But since then, there's been no sign of a new series being put into production. We've had rumours, quotes and signs of life, but nothing definite.

Russell T Davies said even before Children Of Earth screened that he had plans for a full fourth series of Torchwood, whether it was for a five or 13 episode run. He declared at the time that it was dependent on the performance of Children Of Earth. We come back to the question therefore: what else did it need to do?

As late as November last year, Davies was reportedly suggesting - although he never confirmed this - that Torchwood's fourth series was in the works, and that things were due to start moving on that in January 2010. I attended a Q&A with Davies in December, though, and he wasn't really saying anything of the sort then. Instead, he was repeating the line that, in spite of what John Barrowman had been saying, there was no firm news on more Torchwood.

Barrowman has been quite vocal about it, as you might expect. He said towards the end of last year that he's signed up for a deal to do a 13-episode series four of the show (and BBC America too had hinted a new series was on the way), but again, all official sources downplayed this.

Could it be that Torchwood had arrived looking for a recommission at just the wrong time? It's been well reported that the BBC is looking to end some of its longer running dramas - Spooks is in line for the chop, for instance - in favour of bringing in fresh series instead. Is Torchwood ultimately a victim of that policy? It's unlikely, given that the BBC is investing heavily in drama from its Cardiff base, but it may still have caused delays at least. After all, Davies had said that the outline for the series was pretty much in place, so you have to assume that it;s the BBC that's been reluctant, for whatever reason, to pull the trigger.

Maybe the biggest spanner in the works is Davies himself, though. He's moved to America since he finished work on the Doctor Who specials of last year, and is said to be writing some projects for US TV as a result. That, in itself, doesn't rule out him getting involved with a UK-set Torchwood, of course. Two more series of The Sarah Jane Adventures have been commissioned, and Davies is on board as executive producer. The BBC has just hired in another producer, presumably to take day-to-day running duties.

Distance, therefore, shouldn't be a barrier to a new Torchwood series. But what could be is interest from the Fox network in the States about developing a US version.

Fox has burned through a few sci-fi shows in recent years - Dollhouse and The Sarah Connor Chronicles, anyone? - yet, it still retains an interest in the genre.

Thus, in January of this year, it was reported that Fox was keen to develop a US Torchwood that would have Russell T Davies on writing duties. Were that true, you could understand that that's where Davies' focus would be (it would suit perfectly too, given that he's in Los Angeles). It would also involve John Barrowman, hinting at some continuity with the British version (Barrowman has, after all, turned up in Desperate Housewives, so US executives are likely to be warm to the idea of him returning).

Were Davies to press ahead with that, and it's looking possible, then you'd have to assume that the BBC Torchwood show would be mothballed for the foreseeable future, if not forever. Depending on the success Fox has or otherwise with it, it would after all  eat up the time and energies of Davies and his close team.

The last we heard on all of this was John Barrowman turning up on Radio 2 over the weekend. For a change, Barrowman was quite coy on Torchwood's future, reiterating that he'd love to play Captain Jack Harkness again, but adding that he wouldn't mind whether that's in the UK or the US.

Given that John Barrowman has hardly been shy about revealing Torchwood information in the past, we wonder if this hints heavily at the US version gaining traction? After all, the world of US TV tends to be a more secretive place, and the actor is likely to have to toe a PR line more heavily in the US than the UK.

Whichever direction Torchwood is heading, further news would be welcome very soon. The momentum of Children Of Earth may have been diluted, but it's still a series that's stayed long in the memory of some of us who sat through it. It also reignited a thirst for more Torchwood that it'd surely be folly not to capitalise on. Our best guess is that the American version takes precedence, and thus we wait to hear news on that.

Sooner rather than later though, please?

I have been starting to wonder if TW has become a victim of its own success, that the Beeb doesn't know what to do with the show after its huge success... Do they give it a 13 week run and risk it being BBC2 fodder (seasons 1&2) on BBC1 and be a laughing stock, do they try and repeat CoE and run the risk of it failing. All mixed with a liberal amount of US money promising the kind of budgets that BBC tends to dream about but at what cost.... All leading to a possibly terminal case of brain fade :-( Come on Auntie, TW proved it can stand on the big stage all by itself so just let it, ignore the americans for the moment and just make S4 before the show fades completely from public memory. If the Yanks want to make TW US then sign the deals but have it be part of the DW franchise but a separate production.

Why can't the Beeb produce Torchwood in a partnership with Fox, like Five Days is made with US cash? It could have scenes in America and the UK, giving it a more global feel.

Personally I would love to see another run of British Torchwood (with lots more after that!) but a U.S. version would be welcome too.I just want it to return in a form that is still recognisable Torchwood.Ive been hooked on it since the first episode and love the show and it deserves the chance to shine again like it did brighter than last Summer's Sun!!.

Of all the SF shows I've ever seen the one that I hate the most is Torchwood. From its trite plotting to its pointless need to shock, I loath it. So if it never comes back then I’ll be a happy man and the world will be a better place. BTW I think that this is the longest non-list story I’ve ever seen on GoD!

It always amuses me when people loathe a show so much they have to launch into some crass diatribe about how much they hate. How about simply not watching it if it doesn't take your fancy?

I want British Torchwood.

Partnership between Fox and BBC - it might actually work, but then we had The New Avengers with French and Canadian money thrown in, which didn't really work creatively [especially the Canadian eps].

I was writing a response to the whole ‘if you don’t like it don’t watch it’ point of view but then I realised I was writing the beginnings of a flame war, which really would have been crass! So let me explain why I think Torchwood is a pile of poo. First it’s the constant use of idiot plots, where one person or more likely everybody has to act like a moron to advance the story. My favourite example being the bit in Countrycide where the supposedly super efficient team, the best at what they do, have their car stolen because someone leaves the keys in it! Then there’s the need to shock, remember the whole ‘every lead character has to have a same sex kiss’ malarkey in the first series or the killing of the young boy at the end of CoE. I could go on but if I’m being honest the real reason I hate it is that there were glimpse of brilliance none of which ever amounted to anything and I just hate that waste.

Have we learned nothing about how far Fox will go to kill any and all sci-fi that airs on its network? I live in the US and I don't want Torchwood to come here. I have BBCAmerica (in HD even) and I use torrents. I don't need a watered down/quickly cancelled version of a show I like just because it may be a little bit more convenient for me to watch.

"...if I’m being honest the real reason I hate it is that there were glimpse of brilliance none of which ever amounted to anything..." While my feelings on the matter when it comes specifically to Torchwood are more mixed I have to say Heroes, Primeval and Torchwood all followed a similiar pattern for me. First season: I see characters and potential I like. Second season: The potential I saw goes unfulfilled. Characters (and the actors that played them) I liked are removed from the shows -- D.L. Hawkins (played by Leonard Roberts) on Heroes, Stephen Hart (played by James Murray) on Primeval and both Owen Harper (played by Burn Gorman) and Toshiko Sato (played by Naoko Mori) on Torchwood. Characters I have no interest in are retained -- Nikki Sanders et al (played by Ali Larter) on Heroes, Helen Cutter (played by Juliet Aubrey) on Primeval and Gwen Cooper (played by Eve Myles) on Torchwood. Third season: I either can't be bothered to watch the full series -- Heroes and Primeval -- or wish I'd known not to watch it all. Heroes I watched only the third season opener. Primeval I watched only the last episodes featuring Nick Cutter (played by Doug Henshall). If had known Ianto Jones (played by Gareth David Lloyd) was only only going to be in four episodes of the third series I would only have watched those episodes. The difference between Torchwood and the other two series in that group is that I would be happy to see a revival of Torchwood that included Ianto Jones, the Rift, the Hub, Myfanwy, the SUV and the weevils. What makes it no different from the other series is that I don't believe the producers have a clue as to what would make me happy.

To BeccaDG, though I do not dispute your right to an opinion about these things your comment about "...had I known Ianto Jones...was only going to be in four episodes...I would only have watched those episodes." Is rather a daft comment, as you could have stopped watching after the blatant death of Ianto in episode four. really you shot yourself in the foot by watching the 5th episode if you were only watching for his sake.

I am also American, and have to agree with Cannobeans. Fox TV (or any other US network) is the last thing that Torchwood needs. Would it be cool to have a Torchwood Branch in the US? Heck yeah! But I just don't think we're ready over here. The first time Jack kissed any thing other than a desparate housewife on American Television the religeous fundamentalists would go crazy. There would be sponsor boycots and threats, and probably a senator or two who weigh in on the degradation of our society. The tea party whack-jobs would blame Obama somehow, and PETA may even demand proof that the Pteradactyl is being paid a fair union wage. The whole thing would get cancelled before it had a chance. Or worse, corporate executives would water it down so much (so it is more Palletable to our sensibilities) that it wouldn't even be recognizable at Torchwood. We deserve better. Mr. Davies deserves better. For heaven's sake, just look at what we did to Coupling!

This is a really great show and quite the money maker tool. it would be foolish not to bring back this series. Well I loved Children of the Earth, I don't want the series to be reduced to a five day mini-sod. Why chop up the series that way just to save some money. I want the whole series back. Stop mucking around with my show and just air it.

On 7 June 2010, it was confirmed that Torchwood will be returning as a co-production between BBC Cymru Wales, BBC Worldwide and US premium entertainment network Starz for a fourth series consisting of 10 episodes. John Barrowman and Eve Myles will be returning to the series which will feature locations from around the world. That explains his "Desperate Housewives" thingy and how they can manage it. Good news.
