24 about to be axed?

Simon Brew

The demise of Jack Bauer’s television adventures is expected to be confirmed, with Fox rumoured to be about to can 24…

Published on Mar 10, 2010

Reports in Variety suggest that the long-running adventures of Jack Bauer may be about to come to an end. It reports that Fox is expected to announce the cancellation of 24 in the next day or two, a move that's not a massive surprise given that Kiefer Sutherland's expensive contract is up, and that the show's best days are clearly behind it.

There had been some chatter earlier in the year about the potential for a ninth season, but not since season five have we been particularly pumped up about the show. It doesn't help that the show's budget has been rising as its ratings have declined, and Variety reports that 24 may yet be sold to another network.

More likely is that this will mean the long-mooted 24 movie is set to press ahead, as Fox has already hired Billy Ray to pen a script for a Jack Bauer feature. That script would send Jack Bauer over here to Europe, to try and screw things up for us, too.

The formal announcement is expected in the next day or two. Insert your own obligatory clock ticking joke here...

24 still one of the best shows on American TV shame it has fallen so far hope the movies bring it back to life. season 2 was its best season 5 was brilliant till the worst ending of all the seasons ruined it getting jack kidnapped by the Chinese was flat out worse move ever on the show sorry as a fan i feel it failed and the fact to start the season they killed Palmer and Michelle it just was a ending to a Era on Tv Godspeed will miss the Clock but cant wait to see jack Bauer kicking ass and taking names on the big screen instead of a dam it we will now get fuck it

Seasons 6 to prenst have been atrosciously written - if this is STILL one of the US best shows then i fear to wonder how bad the others are.. But then again I have been watching heroes and know all too well how bad that has gotten. Shame lost will no longer be with us after this year.

Personally I felt season 1 was brilliant, 2 and 3 better, 4 still very good but not as good as 2/3, 5 was enjoyable but.... 6 was shit, 7 worse and 8 is just blah. If they want more seasons then I think they need to kill Jack because whilst he is alive there is no tension. As for Lost, giving it an end date is what has returned it to be great telly.

"That script would send Jack Bauer over here to Europe, to try and screw things up for us, too." The terrorists usually do the screwing-up part, while Jack tries to solve that by killing them. Give the guy some credit for what he's done for mankind!

Some strong opinions i see. Just rewatched season1 thru to present again.. Season 5 was definately the best of all, alot of it down to the Dennis Haysberts replacement, Gregory Itzin as Charles Logan. Was hard act to follow as Palmer was big part of 24 since get day 1. I think every season has its highs and lows..but all in all 24 is without doubt alot better than half the shows that are around atmo! Heroes lol.. thats sucked since season 2. I think theres still alot of life left in the show. Im not ready to see Bauer killed off. Just need to keep the writing fresh. Always wandered why they dont liase with other ctu agencies..anything to get them out of LA. Recently D.C and now NY.. but be good way to introduce new regular characters. The 24 in Europe could be good way of adding a new dimension, CTU, MI6,CNI etc. Course the show revolves around jack so ctu dosent even need to be big part, could have a whole season where jacks in some bourne identity thing..or hunting a serial killer who killed his.. Season 5 of Dexter is suppose to revole mainly on him and not so much where he used to work..so heres to creative writing and not bloody network targets.

As much as I am really enjoying season 8, definitely the most since season 5, I think this is a good move. They've done everything they can with Jack short of eating a nucleur bomb and then belching on the terrorists as he shoots them in the face. Everyone always talks about killing Jack- why? Can they not just let him walk off (again) into the sunset- he's done enough to earn it for god's sake. Thing is with the world they inhabit and how generally shite the rest of CTU is, I dread to think of the state of America when Bauer isn't around to save them. They won't last 5min...
