Doctor Who news round-up: villains, opening episode, and anti-Thatcher?

Our latest round-up of new stories surrounding the upcoming series of Doctor Who…

Published on Feb 15, 2010

* The Matt Smith/Steven Moffat era of Doctor Who is set to open with a 60-minute episode, reports Radio Free Skaro. The site has got its hands on an official press release from the BBC to promote the new series of the show, and in there it reveals that Smith's first adventure, The Eleventh Hour, will be an hour long. Radio Free Skaro

* The same press release confirms that the Daleks are returning, but that this time they'll be in a story set in the middle of London in the 1940s. It also teases that the Doctor and his assistant, Amy Pond, are followed by a "silent menace" wherever they go.

* Among the monsters that the Doctor will be battling in the new series is an old favourite: the Silurians, last seen in Doctor Who in 1984...

* Nina Wadia, of EastEnders fame, is also reported to be playing a villain in the new series. She plays Zainab Masood in the soap, but in Doctor Who she's going to be playing an evil psychiatric.

* Fancy see what this year's Doctor Who Easter Eggs are going to look like? Our chums at Blogtor Who have pictures...

* Finally, there's an interesting story today about how the scriptwriters of Doctor Who in the 1980s had an anti-Margaret Thatcher agenda (something that anyone who looked at The Happiness Patrol in any depth could have picked up on). Sylvester McCoy has been quoted as saying, "The idea of bringing politics into Doctor Who was deliberate, but we had to do it very quietly and certainly didn't shout about it."

He went on to say, in a piece quoted in The Times that, "We were a group of politically motivated people and it seemed the right thing to do. At the time Doctor Who used satire to put political messages out there in the way they used to do in places like Czechoslovakia. Our feeling was that Margaret Thatcher was far more terrifying than any monster the Doctor had encountered. Those who wanted to see the messages saw them; others, including one producer, didn't."

Those high up the BBC chain were apparently unaware of what was going on, which has also been confirmed by script editor at the time, Andrew Cartmel. The BBC has released a predictably snotty response to all of this when questioned, claiming to be baffled by the claims. The Daily Mail has also run a mighty predictable story, talking about "left-wing scriptwriters" and "propaganda", and how Norman Tebbit was right. So we won'tlink to that, if it's all the same. Here's the story at The Times.

On the one hand it's good to see The Times paying attention to some Classic Who. On the other hand, it's not exactly a bombshell to your average Who fan! Not a well-kept secret was it... ;) The Happiness Patrol is a good example in Who of something that seems gaudy and silly on the surface, but is actually a lot deeper when you pick at it. What is happiness worth without sadness?

Good news about the 60min opener, adds some weight to the rumour of an Easter Saturday (April 3rd) transmission date for the start of the new series...

As for politics in Who, there was ALWAYS politics in Who, you just have to look for it... Communism, Ecology and Buddhism were all subtexts in the Pertwee era. Creative people and especially Actors, Writers and Directors are usually (though not entirely!...)left wing. Certainly, David Tennant's recent comments about David Cameron in DWM suggest he is no fan of tory politics...

'She plays Zainab Masood in the soap, but in Doctor Who she's going to be playing an evil psychiatric.' An evil psychiatric what?

Thatcher never did the amount of damage to the country that the current unelected and incapable PM has. but then, when has the BBC ever been impartial?

Silurians last seen in 1984? Surely it was more like 1974 (Pertwee era)? unless you're referring to their marine cousins the Sea Devils (who swapped their fish-net rags for stylish samurai-style armour in the 80s).

Yes, The Silurians and Sea Devils both date from the Pertwee era (in the eponymously titled serials of 1970 and 1972 to be precise!) They both returned in 1984 in the Peter Davison adventure Warriors Of The Deep. All three stories are available on the Beneath The Surface DVD boxset.Worth getting hold of! ;o)

Sorry, I try to resist, but... @ _tjn_ Thatcher started the sell off of our national services to private companies, the Tory government began the deregulation of the banking and pretty much every other industry, ultimately leading to the current situation. NuLab's big mistakes were thinking that they needed to be more Tory to appeal to the populace, and continuing those policies of privatisation and deregulation. Gordon Brown is incompetent and unelected, but Thatcher did the damage, the scale of the damage she did just wasn't apparent until recently when the full effects have started to be felt. Back on topic: Can't wait!!!

Agree. And don't forget the soaring inflation of 1979/80, the 4 million unemployed by 1982, the Miners strike. Undervaluing Nurses, Teachers and the Arts. A lack of interest and compassion for anyone living in the North, especially Liverpool, the pole tax, 15% interest rates... I could go on but then again I get the feeling tjn was trying to be deliberately provocative... Moving on, this is a cult tv and film site after all! Looking forward to the new series. ;o)
