Being Human series 2 episode 6 review

Mark Oakley

Is Being Human in danger of being boring? Last night's episode suggests a potentially rocky ride home for this second series...

Published on Feb 15, 2010

Oh, dear. My fears about Annie's diminishing importance in the show were realised in this latest episode as the second series of Being Human delivered its first truly duff hour.

If last week's babysitting episode was little more than a slight comic treatment of her lack of purpose in life, this week's shoehorning in of a fraudulent psychic and the random appearance of her mother were steps too far, in my view. The chances of Annie's mum just happening to turn up to a psychic show were as slight as the chances of a psychic turning up in Bristol in the first place and this was the clearest evidence yet that episode four represented the culmination of her character's story arc.

The writers have apparently had no idea of what to do with her since then, so instead of giving her a dignified ending, they appear to be placing her in a bunch of haphazardly connected plotlines that have no bearing on the wider story. And while her relationship with her mother could have been of some curiosity, its treatment here was too sloppily handled to hold any interest.

Likewise the idea of helping out the ghosts that the psychic had lost touch with due to an accident (utterly ridiculous, by the way). The side-story of the chap on stage who wanted his wife to confess to having had an affair was dull, to be frank, and I was just waiting for Mitchell to come back up on screen and give me a reason to keep watching.

Unfortunately, I was kept waiting as he barely appeared in this episode. His continuing battles with his own salvation provided this week's finest moments, typically, and built to an explosive climax. Those final five or so minutes - Kemp and Lucy praying before she, very reluctantly, gave the order to get rid of the vampire community, juxtaposed with Ivan spotting the bomb - was perfectly executed and ramped up the tension, providing a cliffhanger to come back for next week ala 24.

Cleverly, clips of next week's episode showed no glimpses of Mitchell to keep you guessing as to what has happened to all inside the funeral home. I'm thinking he'll be just fine - the show's hardly likely to kill off its most interesting character - but it was a nice touch all the same.

George continued in his attempts to get his life back on track by taking the alarming step of moving in with Sam and Molly, which is all a little unrealistic, as I mentioned last week. However, it makes sense from the point of view of him wanting to so desperately live a normal life that he would take such huge strides.

No wolfie action again but that's all set to change next week from the looks of the preview, so I presume that, by setting up his relationship with Sam, the show is now going to rip his whole world apart again by reintroducing Nina and providing George and Annie with meetings with Kemp. I certainly hope so, as Being Human has been placing so much emphasis on our threesome wanting to become like anyone else of late that it's in danger of losing its geek factor.

I've always loved the central concept of the show: how can three otherworldly beings really live a normal life in society? This second series has admirably attempted to explore that idea in detail, but I worry that in doing so it has held back on the unreal elements of the show and with no werewolves, no vampires and a deathly dull ghost, it risks becoming little more than just another BBC drama. The show is better than this. It needs to prove it next week.

WHAT? A review so wide off the mark I have never seen. I thought it was the absolute best episode of the series! *spoilers* The bringing in the religious far right group was brilliant, Annie's story full of humour but sadness, whatever george was doing. Great stuff all round.

I am siding with Interference. Whilst I agree with the reviewer that Annie has been woefully treated this season, this episode was really strong for her and fitted well with her being a ghost. Yeah it was a bit predictable but it was also very funny and poignant. For me Mitchell's role was the weakest of the 3, but mostly because I have never bought him as vampire king. George's story is far too rushed to be credible, but some of the scenes with him and Molly were brilliant. That said I am growing a bit disillusioned with Being Human, the care and attention to detail that made the 1st series sing is missing. Characters no longer grow and develop instead being pushed from one state to the next with rarely any reason or thought put into it.

The point I'm trying to make with Annie, cordas. There is something niggling with me this series at the moment I'm afraid that characters are being dumped into new situations without any real thought as to what's gone before. I wasn't convinced by Lenora Crichlow's performance this week either - forogt to put that in my review - which didn't help.

I just think that this probably her strongest story this season, and for me apart from the headset 'joke' and the rose (which was a bit ott, but she needed some way to interact with her mum directly) I feel that she carried it off brilliantly.

p.s. I do think that season seems to be lacking in a focused direction, yes there is a story arc but it feels very rough and bumpy in how its being told, such a shame given how strong the season started off.

Agreed. I don't think stretching it out to eight episodes has helped much either.

Interference: I don't know about the religious group being "far right"- it's not as if they're unjustly targeting some ethnic minority! If anything, this episode did well to remind us that not everyone's views on vampiricism would be based on Robert Pattinson.

I pretty much agree with this review. Just how many cliches were there in this episode? Goeorge struggling with IKEA furniture, Mitchell practicing his speech to an empty room, the "I'm standing right next to you" joke, the creepy kid, it was all very plodding and predictable. Only the Mitchell story was any good, but even then it still seemed like a waste. Killing off Ivan is a shame, and as said in the review its obvious Mitchell will be fine, seeing as how he's pretty much the main character most weeks. This series has gone downhill the past couple of weeks, hopefully they can pick up the pace for the final 2 episodes, because so far, nothing has been as interesting as Herek and co were in the last series.

Really disappointed; this episode was made of all kinds of fail. Mitchell's plot was the best but even here the tension felt a bit tired and predictable. And for me Lucy has lost a huge amount of her power as a character since her reveal. This series has completely collapsed since eps 1 & 2 - though I'll stick with it to the end now in the hope that something may still be salvaged.

I can't help thinking that some of the 'problems' with BH in the last episode or two may indicate a little too much urgency on the part of the writers to secure a 3rd series. Careful what you wish for folks, it's still surely one of the better geek shows on at the moment?

@ shruggy63 - Would you care to explain, surely this was filmed months ago.

A series 3 has been commissioned already. (Although to be fair I don't know if they knew that when this episode was being filmed.) Overall, I liked this episode and series as a whole. It's not perfect - I don't buy George's rushing into a new relationship either... although it does happen in real life... but it's good telly just the same.

For me this series is about asking us who the bad guy really is in the programme. Last series was clear - our three protaganists were heroes and the Vampire clan were the baddies. Done deal. Now however, something more complex is happening. We are being forced to recognise that Mitchell is a killer, not just a charming Irish dude in a leather jacket, and that George would rip your throat out when in Werewolf form. Who was in the wrong when Mitchell killed the police chief? The same Police character would be represented as a good guy in lots of series. He was taking the classic 'do whatever needs to be done to get the bad guy' route. Gene Hunt anyone? Dexter? And yet Mitchell chose to kill him instead of a peadophile. And Mitchell is a serial killer remember? He even echoed the exact words of the peadophile when talking to the Policeman. For me this is skating on very thin ice but the writers and producers were asking a very clear question. Similarly we were shown the motivation of the 'far right religeous cult' quite clearly. It's a guy who's dedicated his life to killing vampires because three of them brutally killed his wife and little girl. This seems quite reasonable to me - in context most people would do the same thing. And yet we are asked to see him as the bad guy. His group blows up all of the Vampires and we are asked to see this as wrong. But last series those same vampires were the bad guys. For me this series isn't about storyline at all, which is why it sits quite uncomrtably in a Sci-Fi context. Traditionally Sci-Fi is about plot first and foremost, character and narrative second. (Before anyone points it out, I know there are loads of exceptions to the rule - but it is still a rule). This time around Being Human is about narrative and plot and I for one think it's really working. I'm actually not convinced that our protaganists are the good guys anymore (apart from Annie, who is a bit of an adjunct in this question).

I doubt this wish will be granted but here it is anyway: Somewhere in the no-doubt action heavy finale I would really appreciate a serious VERBAL confrontation between Lucy,Mitchell, Kemp and Daisy but sadly I doubt there will be time...too bad the writers drew out the meeting between the vampires and CENSa until the very end....
