Doctor Who wins at National TV Awards

Simon Brew

Seriously! That’s the best factual programme that Britain has to offer, is it? We’re emigrating

Doctor Who and David Tennant take home prizes at the National TV Awards. Sadly, so does a lot of dross...

Published on Jan 21, 2010

There were, if we’re being blunt, some fairly crappy shows that seemed to get their unjust rewards at last night’s National Television Awards that were handed out on London. But, on the bright side, there were some shows that were worthy of recognition when reality TV shows weren’t being fawned over (and seriously, there are some shows on the list of winners that make you wonder if democracy is a good thing).

Primarily, we’re talking Doctor Who, which snagged Best Drama Performance for David Tennant, and Best Drama for the BBC. Stephen Fry also got a Special Recognition Award and the Best Star Travel Documentary for his fun Stephen Fry: In America.

Less welcome winners? Er, it’s probably best that you read this really quite depressing list yourself. Did people really vote for half of this shit?

Serial Drama Performance
Lacey Turner: EastEnders

Drama Performance
David Tennant: Doctor Who

Drama
Doctor Who

Serial Drama
Coronation Street

Star Travel Documentary
Stephen Fry: In America

Most Popular Entertainment Programme
Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway

Most Popular Entertainment Presenter
Ant & Dec

Most Popular Talent Show
The X Factor

Most Popular Comedy Programme
Gavin & Stacey

Most Popular Factual Programme
Loose Women (seriously! That’s the best factual programme that Britain has to offer, is it? We’re emigrating.)

Most Popular Newcomer
Craig Gazey: Coronation Street

Special Recognition Award
Stephen Fry

Next year, can they let us choose the winners? We’d really prefer that.

other than Doctor Who winning the only redeeming feature of this show was the Jedward/Vanilla Ice performance - it was so unreal I am still not sure if I dreamed it or not

Even Doctor Who wasn't that special this year imo, its just the best of a bad bunch....and some of these are excrucuatingly bad. I agree if this is the best then British TV is really plumbing the depths.

Never watched more depressing TV in a while. Loose Women doesn't really surprise me. There was a lot of begging for votes going on as far as I've heard. Doctor who winning wasn't so bad but DT should expect less of these now he's gone. All that show did was remind me why I don't watch ITV any more.

You still have to love Piers Morgan being devastated at losing to the current target of his bile, Lord Sir Stephen Fry. Enjoy! http://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae9/DoctorWoodAdventures2/Random/MyMovie_2__0001.jpg?t=1264020438

Loose Women had a campaign behind it - Top Gear should have won - now that *is* quality TV...
