Re: The Day Of The Triffids: news and lots of pictures18 pictures, and not one Triffid...what's the betting they look pants.?
Re: The Day Of The Triffids: news and lots of picturesHopefully they won't look like pants... HOPEFULLY!!! Its perfectly feasible that they are holding off showing us Triffids for a big reveal... Oh and I will quite happily admit the 1981 production scared the bejesus out of my 9 year old self... so much so that even watching it now is enough to send me into a cold sweat! I just hope and pray that this is going to be a worthy adaptation of novel and lives upto the high standards of the BBC's previous take on it.
Re: The Day Of The Triffids: news and lots of picturesYeah the '81 version freaked me out big time. I'm still prepared to stay indoors under the bed covers the first sign of pretty lights in the sky. By the way, that third shot with our heroes running away from st pauls seems to be put together by a post-triffid-light-show compositor. I'd not have released that shot if I was the BBC, it sucks and blows at the same time.
Re: The Day Of The Triffids: news and lots of picturesSooo... I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I expect more rubbish British Sci-fi, ala Paradox. Seriously, you guys have an amazing track record for producing sci-fi and fantasy but nowadays it's mostly pants. Good sci-fi seemingly has to be disguised (Life on Mars) while most "straight" sci-fi and fantasy is of the "fun for the whole family" variety, no doubt to maximise those demographics! new Doctor Who, Merlin and Bonekickers are all prime examples. /Rant :)
Re: The Day Of The Triffids: news and lots of picturesbut yeah... more Eddie Izzard is better Eddie Izzard.
Re: The Day Of The Triffids: news and lots of pictures@evanjdooner - Its not as simple as that, yeah we have produced some utter crap (demons is probably the worst that springs to mind) there has also been some good stuff like the remake of Survivors and some fantastic stuff like Misfits, Dead Set and Torchwood Children of Earth. I am fervently hoping that this fits into the latter category.
Re: The Day Of The Triffids: news and lots of picturesThat shot of Izzard in front of Number 10 with a shotgun is 'picture of the week' for sure.
Re: The Day Of The Triffids: news and lots of picturesI love Eddie Izzard but whenever I see him in a 'serious' role I just think of things he did in his stage show - things like 'aaaahhhh, triffids, yes... so, they are kinda big, flowery, yes, and scary, scary, like cats with drills and monkeys' (add little dance) - He's still great though
Re: The Day Of The Triffids: news and lots of picturesI would bet we see very little of the triffids at all - like many horror shows the less you see the more effective it can be - especially if you are trying to realise as difficult a concept as a realistic believable man eating plant - great in books but hugely difficult on screen. (BTW I was terrified by the 81 version as well..)
Re: The Day Of The Triffids: news and lots of picturesI love the 1981 version. This version is already a failure as it has Jason Priestly in it.
Re: The Day Of The Triffids: news and lots of picturesI suspect it will be dire. They will attempt to remake a great story with a modern 'twist' of some kind, or an eco-statement. The 1981 version was good, and still holds up surprisingly well because it stayed faithful to a fine original.
Re: The Day Of The Triffids: news and lots of picturesEddie Izzard with a shotgun surely equals win :)
Re: The Day Of The Triffids: news and lots of picturesYes, there will definitely, definitely be an ecological statement in there. And it will be po-faced.
Re: The Day Of The Triffids: news and lots of picturesI have a bad feeling about this. |

The Day Of The Triffids: news and lots of pictures
Simon Brew
The BBC is bringing The Day Of The Triffids to our screens again over Christmas. And we’ve got some shots of the production right here…
One of the treats in the BBC Christmas schedules, potentially at least, is the new two part adaption of John Wyndham's post-apocalyptic novel The Day Of The Triffids.
It's not the first time the BBC has tackled the book, of course, with a series screening on TV in 1981 with John Duttine in the lead role, and it's also been adapted for radio too on several occasions. And confession time: in spite of it boasting effects that would have shamed Doctor Who, I was quite scared of the 1981 TV version. Don't tell anyone, though.
Anyway, the new version, which is screening on December 28 and 29, stars Dougray Scott, Joely Richardson, Brian Cox, Vanessa Redgrave, Eddie Izzard and Jason Priestley. And the BBC has now issued some stills from the production for us to feast our eyes over.
You can take a look at the assorted stills right here, and we look forward to seeing what's been made of the book this time round. We hope it turns out better than the movie version, which we never liked the ending of...
