David Tennant signs up for US legal series

Simon Brew

What will David Tennant do once his reign as Doctor Who is over? Turns out he might be heading to America…

Published on Nov 3, 2009

As his tenure as Doctor Who draws to a close, it's been revealed by Reuters that actor David Tennant may well have found a new project to keep him off the streets. Tennant has reportedly signed up to a new pilot of a legal series being developed by NBC in the States, with the network presumably keen to repeat the success that Hugh Laurie continues to enjoy in House.

The show is called Rex Is Not Your Lawyer, and it's a comedy drama about a litigator - that'd be Tennant's character - who suffers panic attacks. It's a little bit out of concept corner, to be fair, with said litigator then beginning to coach clients so that they can represent themselves in the court room.

The project has been milling around for a year or two, having finally secured a green light from NBC in the summer. And if the pilot episode hits big, as NBC will be hoping (and it is in safe territory for US TV drama, given that it's a legal show), then Mr Tennant may well be spending an awful lot of time in America for the next few years.

Here's the Reuters story.

This sounds like a perfect career move for Mr Tennant. Sadly, he's made so much impact in 'Doctor Who', that if he stays in the UK, he's likely to be 'ex-Doctor Who Tennant' for quite a number of years. However, I hope in a while, when the dust settles, he comes back...

I think David would be brilliant in this, I just hope they let him keep his own accent. I can't imagine him pulling a Hugh Laurie.

I don't think legal shows really have the muscle they did a few years ago. I'll probably give it a go, for Mr. Tennant, but NBC shouldn't hold its breath, unless they can make that concept seem fresh and quirky, not contrived and annoying. Doubtful.

He wasn't even using his own accent in Dr. Who...

I just love David Tennant and in my opinion, would have had him remain as Dr.Who for a lot longer. But thinking of him coming to the states and seeing him every week instead of waiting and waiting to see a series of Dr. Who is brilliant! The only thing that concerns me is that there was a similar show where the main character was a private detective rather than a lawyer ~ "Monk". I'm hoping NBC can make the show different enough so that it flies and we can see DT in all his wonderfulness for a long time to come!

Sounds good! Hopefully if Big Finish get audio rights for doctors 9-10 he'll come back and do a bunch of audios, hell he could even do them from america and send them back. But good to see he's going on to conquer america!
