Steven Moffat on the next series of Doctor Who

Simon Brew

How is the next full series of Doctor Who shaping up? Its new chief, Steven Moffat, has been spilling a few beans…

Published on Nov 2, 2009

Last week, Steven Moffat took to the stage of the Screenwriters' Festival in Cheltenham to talk about what kind of things are in store for the upcoming fifth series of the revived Doctor Who. Interviewed on stage by Benjamin Cook, here are the highlights of what Mr Moffat had to say (and we're indebted to the report at Digital Spy for filling in some of the gaps - link at the bottom!)...

* Could the new Tardis interior be influenced by Peter Cushing's, from the movie version of the show? Steven Moffat revealed that he's certainly a fan of Cushing's Tardis, so don't be surprised if its influence it felt...

* He re-emphasised that Doctor Who is a kids' show, citing the failure of the 1996 TV movie with Paul McGann as an example of how going too grown-up with Doctor Who doesn't work.

* Very, very good news: Mr Moffat is penning six (SIX!) episodes of the next series of the show. Add to that the earlier news that Richard Curtis is penning an episode, and that's six more to work out. It seems that Moffat wasn't to be drawn on that, though, although he didn't confirm or seemingly deny rumours of high profile guest writers being involved (although Curtis falls into that camp, to be fair).

*  Moffat revealed that The Sun got hold of his script for The Silence In The Library before it was broadcast and threatened to publish it. Moffat simply told them to do it - "I'd like to see The Sun publish that many words in a day"

* Moffat said that Matt Smith was the third person auditioned for the role, reiterating that he's very much a young man coming across a lot older.

* The biggest challenge for Steven Moffat about Doctor Who's new series? According to the man himself, it's writing the final episode...

The TV Movie was too grown-up? Mmm, not sure about that. I don't think the problems it had were due to it being too adult or anything, nor were the low ratings in the US due to that either. Not often I disagree with the Grand Moff! Six Moffat stories are good so long as he doesn't stretch himself too thin...even Robert Holmes had a duffer or two when that happened.

"too grown-up"? Oh dear, that doesn't sound encouraging.

It's a real shame that Paul McGann didn't get a longer crack at The Doctor. He seemed to be quite good in the role (and so was Sylvester McCoy in that film - much better than during his TV run I thought). Maybe they could get both Doctors involved in an episode or two of the new series.

Dr. Who is family entertainment. Torchwood the adult arm and Sarah Jane Adventures the kids show. Each of them function well in there age ranges, Dr. Who is the show that holds them all together obviously

I'm in shock. It seems as if every time the "brains" behind Doctor Who gives an interview, whether it be RTD or now Moffat, it is simply to say: a) fans will like whatever we give them, so tough; b) it's just a kids' show that no one should take seriously -- so when it's weak, too bad. The Cushing console room comment is a priceless bit of misdirection meant to confuse and harass fans. Moffat, and Davies before him, makes these comments just to stir things up, and to show how truly insignificant he believes fan reactions really are. It'd almost be nice to see the new series tank in the ratings. That way they wouldn't be able to take such things for granted.

The biggest mistake of the 1996 movie (and it was a huge mistake at that) was listening to advice given by FOX network execs on how to make the film appeal to a larger American audience. (They didn't understand the product and got it all wrong.) My concern with what's written above is the bit about Moffat being influenced by the Peter Cushing TARDIS interior. Surely he jests.

What exactly is everyones problem with people re-iterating that it's a kids show? It IS a kids show, to change that, to go too 'dark' and 'adult' is to rip the heart out of the programme. It's NOT Battlestar Galactica, stop trying to make it that. I think Moffats just making sure people stay realistic in their expectations. He's already showed that he can take a 'Kids' show format and make it exciting and brilliant, WITHIN the format of childrens programming. 'Blink' was amazing precisely BECAUSE it's a kids show. Moffats strength is that he understands what scares and comforts children, probably more so than RTD does. That's the heart of the show, don't moan about it, revell in it! And if you don't like family dramas, don't watch Doctor Who.

I wouldn't worry about the "kids show" label that Stephen Moffat gave the show.(merlin07). We are talking about the guy who wrote The Empty Child; Blink; and Silence In The Library
