Why Fox has kept Dollhouse going

John Moore

So Fox has said it will air all of Dollhouse season 2? There's a good reason why, reckons John...

Published on Oct 16, 2009

In the US, the Fox Network's scheduling chief is a bloke by the name of Preston Beckman. Anyone who was a big fan of Firefly or Drive (is that even possible? They aired four episodes ferchrissakes) probably already knew that that. Hell, they might have sent him an abusive e-mail at some point.

Fox, let it be said, are brutal when it comes to cutting shows that don't do the numbers... Or should that be ‘were'?

Hardly anyone thought Dollhouse would be back for a second season - judging by the correspondence Joss Whedon sent out to US journos with the S2 press pack, even he didn't think Dollhouse was coming back. But back it came...

As Mr. Beckman so eloquently put it: "If you cancel it, you're an asshole; if you renew it and then don't put it back on, you're an asshole... I'm still paying for 'Terminator'. "'Dollhouse' has a small rabid fan base that in the world of social media seems bigger than it is. We gave them another season knowing full well we were going to burn in hell if we pulled it."

And d'ya know what? Not only have they brought it back, Fox are going to back it all the way too. Well, at least to the extent that they intend to show all of the 13 episodes they've commissioned so far for the new run. Very few people expected that, certainly not after the show re-opened to the same disappointing ratings that had characterised its first season - and some 50%ish down on the season one premier.

Nevertheless, according to Joss Whedon - quoted in The Hollywood Reporter's Live Feed Blog: "When we got our first numbers, which were bad, the first thing [Fox president of entertainment] Kevin Reilly said was, 'You'll have all 13,' which was great. They're not going to pull the rug out from under us."

This is good news. Echo et al will get to tell their story to some sort of conclusion it seems, rather than being left floating in TV mid-season limbo, ghostlike and wailing at the walls. What's more, we get to see Olivia Williams scorch the scenery of every scene she's in 13 more times when Sci-Fi UK begins the S2 run next week. We like Olivia Williams.

So why the sudden change of heart? Has Fox gone soft? No, it's the two Ds: DVR and DVD. Dollhouse always got good TiVO/Digital Video numbers - pretty much every episode of season one benefited from a .5 Nielsen ratings boost (according to analysis site TV By The Numbers), the problem has always been that the boost has come from a low viewer base - S2 kicked off with a Nielsen of 1 in the key US demographic (18-49, it's what the ad men like) with a total of 2.52m viewers.

The Friday 9pm slot was, however, won by Medium - with a 18-49 Nielsen of 2, and 8.78m viewers - and even a repeat of new sitcom Modern Family kicked the Dolls' collective (well toned, natch) butts. However, when the playback numbers were added in (who the hell wouldn't rather be in the pub at 9pm on a Friday?), the show's Nielsen hops by .5. Impressive.

Fox aren't stupid, Fox knew this was coming... Fox also lurve the DVD box set. They murdered Firefly, only to wallow in the cash that rolled in as fans bought the DVDs to see unaired episodes. With the screams of the Internet ringing in their ears, Fox slunk off to cash its cheque. This time around they're going to air the series, and then laugh all the way to bank on the back of a two-season, 26 episode ‘complete' box set. But not before tanking any chances of a full season two - let alone season three.

Is that progress? S'pose so. Bet it doesn't make Nathan Fillion feel any better, mind.

I'm sure Fillion is fine about it, considering his stint in Housewives and his new hit show Castle.

I doubt vociferous complaints by fans had anything to do with it... I just think Fox have realised the mistake they made with Firefly so are planning on giving Dollhouse plenty of rope with which to either make an audience for itself and get further series, or well and truly hang itself whilst making enough episodes for a decent box set that they know they will make money off.

Castle is awesome, but I would still have loved Firefly to have a fair crack of the whip...

I'm sure Fillion is fine two - but I think Firefly was a sore point for a while, that really didn't get what it deserved. Nor did Drive, to be honest - but I'd wager they're all much more expensive than putting Duskhu in a new fetish outfit every week.

I know its gets a lot of stick, but Dollhouse is far more interesting than Smallvile, Ghost Whisperer, Medium, Heroes, and loads of other fantasy-tinged shows coming out of America. Personally I'd love to see a back nine for s2, but there's probably more chance of seeing Serenity 2 than that.

you see that excuse would actually hold some credence if they hadn't cancelled tscc which gained better live numbers, better dvr numbers, better dvd sales and has a much larger and more rabid fan base than the 5 dolhhouse guys over at whedonesque. I mean would the dollhouse fans hire a mobile billboard or cinema screen time to get their show back on the air, no they'll go and re watch tru calling. No it's all down to the fact that dollhouse is now dirt cheap to make and fox had no other shows to air on a friday as seen by the 2 comedy shows dollhouse has been paired with. The fans excuse is just a pathetic attempt to garner favour with the sci fi community after it lost them after cancelling firefly and tscc amongst others. When they cancel fringe this season let them see what pathetic excuse them come up with for that one.

Was TSCC really that much more expensive than Dollhouse to make? Yes there were a few bits of CGI thrown about but the show didn't do that very often, most of the fight scenes were done using fairly routine stunt sequences and make up. Honestly I don't know why Fox dropped TSCC, but I would speculate it was because they expected huge ratings because of the Terminator brand and didn't get them (also if they had seen T3 they might have thought that that turkey would be the death knell for the brand for a few years). Really I don't see the point in getting angry at Dollhouse because Fox cancelled TSCC, I doubt that the 2 decisions had much to do with each other. I just think Fox know that they dropped the ball with Firefly, that if they hadn't messed it about and cancelled it that it could have become a good earner in the long term.... and because of that they are giving Joss Whedon more of a chance to see if he can recreate his Buffy magic. They know they screwed the pooch in the 1st season by interfering to much, so are giving him a free reign with the 2nd.

cordas just to point out I'm not angry at dollhouse I actually quite enjoy it although it's level of consistancy quality wise is all over the place at times my anger is directly at fox, for a continually cancelling quality sci fi and now for trying to con fans into thinking that they actually care or give a damn about them.

If you want to hear some interesting discussion with Mr. Whedon about Dollhouse and what went wrong with the first season (among other interesting things), check out his interview with "This American Life" Host Ira Glass here (you will have to scroll down a bit; the interview is the Sept 23 post): http://www.826nyc.org/

Re: TSCC cost of production - given all the product placement in that show it should have been much cheaper to make than Fox were making out. @ Ants971 - Maybe TSCC fans did all that, and Dollhouse fans didn't, but I don't think the full extent of their campaign was to re-watch Tru Calling - a show I watched twice and then dumped. There are fan web ad campaigns and other stuff going on. I also think that having been bitten by the lack of response to the Firefly campaign, Whedon fans know that it isn't necessarily the most strident voice that has the say. Even Joss said that he would have renewed TSCC over DH and so far I'd agree, but I still hold out hope that DH can grow into the thought provoking, gripping show that Joss generally writes.

fox have shown so much faith(pardon the pun) in the show that they have taken it off air during November so that its ratings don't affect the November sweeps. Dead show walking.
