Flash Forward episode 3 review

Billy Grifter

Is this one of those productions where someone compiles a huge list after the show of things that never made sense or didn't fit what explanations got given? We've had a few of those

Billy’s patience with FlashForward is beginning to fray, as episode three proves frustrating...

3. 137 Sekunden

Parts of this show I like, but others make me tear my hair out. For example, within five minutes of FlashForward starting it managed to present an exceptionally stupid view of what might happen if we all lost consciousness for two minutes and seventeen seconds. We are presented an aerial view looking down on an airport where numerous planes have been destroyed. Even those at the terminals? How exactly?

Understanding slightly more about aircraft than the writers of FlashForward, I'd suggest they don't spontaneously explode when parked if not attended for two minutes or more, and, to be honest, they generally wouldn't fall out of the sky either. The only ones in any real danger would be those on final approach using a manual landing, but none of this struck the writers of 137 Sekunden. Which, if you hadn't guessed, is German for 137 seconds, the precise period of the blackout.

But then the obsession with the length of the event seems nonsensical, because a second is an entirely arbitrary measurement, although nobody points this out.

Mark gets a request from an ex-Nazi from his German prison, who offers the knowledge of why the blackout lasted that long for a face to face meeting.

His picture is on Mark's case wall in the future, so he flies to Germany to see Rudolf Geyer to see if he can find any answers.

Meanwhile, Demitri meets his fiancée Zoey, who thinks she sees him on a tropical beach in the future. Shame he's had a phone call from an unidentified female secret agent who tells him when and how he'll die before she's in that lovely location.

At the other end of the aesthetic scale is the prison where Rudolf Geyer resides, and where he proposes they let him free if he tells them what he knows.

Janis, who went with Mark, has to remind him that letting mass murderers free on the basis of how useful something is that they might say is preposterous, but Mark is now entirely consumed by the event and the answers he badly wants.

So when Geyer offers a titbit of information to show good faith, it all seems too good to be true. Which is pretty bizarre considering that what he starts talking about is the Jewish mysticism Kabbalah, of which most people will recall Madonna is reportedly a devotee.

His explanation makes very little sense. It's about Jewish symbols having numerical value and the word Kabbalah in Hebrew equalling 137. But there is a second part, which he won't give yet, but he claims he will give it up when he's released. His proof of this is that in his vision he's been repatriated to the USA, where he previously lived, and gives them details of the border control officer for Mark to verify. This seems remarkably thin evidence to release a Nazi, but FlashForward does hint that people don't really act entirely rationally after the blackout.

Demitri is sent to check out the idiot who will be working border control in six months time, and he corroborates the story, even if he doesn't understand what that word actually means. He's either acting dumb, or he really is stupid.

This isn't the only crazy thing that's going on. Aaron convinces Mark to get his daughter's body exhumed and DNA tested, to confirm once and for all if his vision of her alive was real or not.

But back to Geyer, Mark swings his release on the basis of ‘faith', but it looks like he's been conned. The Kabbalah stuff was all rubbish, and the only piece of information Geyer has is that, when he woke, the courtyard in the prison was littered with dying crows, which suggests that they blacked out too.

Ironically, this turns out to be a real clue, as Janis soon discovers that an isolated mini blackout happened in Somalia in 1991, where the source of this effect seems to have been a cloud released from a high tower.

Is it me, or is this narrative taking far too long to get airborne? Each week we're fed more unconnected jigsaw pieces in the vain hope that if we persevere and the show doesn't get chopped that it will all make sense at some point, or not.

Even if it survives (and it's now got a full first season order), is this one of those productions where someone compiles a huge list after the show of things that never made sense or didn't fit what explanations got given? We've had a few of those.

I'm also more than disappointed for the actress who played Nicole Kirby in the pilot, because we've seen not a jot of her since. This show is developing a very Lost meandering vibe at the moment, and I don't mean in a positive way.

They pretty much lost me with this one. The spontaneously exploding aircraft, the lame and chauvinistic way the Americuns snear at 'other' intelligence agencies, capped by the most ludicrous justification for a Nazi war criminal's release ever. My willing suspension of disbelief could handle a 2.17 minute vision of the future; it cannot handle such blatant dreck. Geyer would have been 19 in 1945 - don't even see how he could have even become a 'most wanted' Nazi war criminal anyway. They just wanted to shoehorn a cartoon Nazi in there, because Nazi's are bad, ain't they? Utter bollox.

I'll keep watching because its on the sky+ box but there's very little in this programme to keep you coming back. All the characters act really stupidly, and no one questions the fact that the flashes CAN'T be the actual future because in the flash they are not aware of the fact that its a flash of the future! I know that sounds like it makes no sense but still.... Then there's the contrived bits that exist only to propell the plot forward. If the woman on the phone wants Demetri to prevent his own murder, then why not give him a little more to go on? The reviewer is right about the planes though, that was dumb.

Is it just me who really hates the Scrubs-ish acoustic ballad they put in the last scene of each episode as if it's poignant in some profound way? Gets right on my tits. Also, I'm just not buying Joseph Fiennes as a rough-around-the-edges alcoholic FBI renegade. The 'Bard he is, Mcnulty he ain't. Despite the bitching and moaning I'm still going to watch the next one though, because damn it I want to know what happens

One of the main things that bother me about this show is the alcoholic plot. The whole world blacks out and gets a 1 minute and 37 second preview of the future and the main character is most worried that he might fall off the wagon? fuck it mate, stop worrying about it and have a drink, I think giving the current situation the world is in no one will blame you. Same with the wife story, it just seems ridiculous. I'm not saying that not wanting to cheat on your partner is ridiculous i'm just saying that the characters seem to self-obsessed to be real. The whole nazi thing pissed me off as well. It's like the writers are trying to use "lets try and invoke more hardcore emotional reaction from the viewers, we already have alcoholism, infidelity and the war in Afghanistan. what else can we use? I know! Nazi's! lets see them deal with a Nazi!". It's not been confirmed in the show but it also seems to be the case that the only people investigating the blackout are these few agents - and that's only because one of them seen that he was investigating it in the future(the only future that seems to have even recognised the blackout happened). What was the deal with the birds as well? Why was the only person who happened to notice all the dead birds around a nazi war criminal and how come it took the guy until now to look for something in the history of the world that might hint that something like this has happened before? not only did he find a "hint" he found an article that describes exactly what has happened but only on a smaller scale. "Whole village blacks out" and "Whole worlds blacks out" are pretty different so I can see how no one else managed to make the connection...yeah. This is a very American centered show I think, which sucks because it had the promise if being something great.

nice one hackmo, use without spaces for paragraphs, 2 in a row gives a line break. @Mangoose, yeah I hate the montages too, and who knew the FBI had such detailed access to crow death records?

Personally I quite enjoyed the episode... This show is obviously going to take a while to get going, why is that surprising or off putting? The whole premise of the show is an enigma wrapped in a conundrum.... To splash the main plot about willy nilly in the 1st 3 episodes would completely blow that out of the water. This is a show based on a similar premise to 24 or LOST, not Trek or BSG... I must agree that I am getting a bit peed off with the over the top stupidity... The planes has already been observed, the multiple burning buildings that spontaneously burst into flames is another gripe. The fact that they didn't say to the Nazi, well the fact you demand that we release you for the information that you saw yourself being released isn't good enough. We will only release you if your final bit of info is worth it. (Note the Nazi did say that the kabalaha shit was just that)

I think most of this review's criticisms are unwarranted. Yes the only planes in danger are ones on takeoff and approach, but at any given moment there are hundreds of such planes all over the world. And spontaneous fires can break out all over the place with everyone blacking out-- people dropping cigarettes, spilling combustable fluids, creating sparks from dropped electronics... I almost feel like if the show had included a truly realistic number of fires, it would have looked too ridiculous. As for the 137 seconds thing, yes it's true that a second is completely arbitrary-- which is why it's so interesting that the blackout seemed to occur exactly on the second of a particular minute and end EXACTLY 137 seconds later. If it had been 137.693847 seconds, it might not be so interesting, but 137 seconds shows that there was some intentional planning going on. From there, it makes sense that a knowledge of why it was 137 seconds and not 136 seconds might yield some sort of actual clue. Yes the show is obviously not perfect (what show is?) but it seems people are looking for reasons to dislike it, and people are getting angry that they actually have to sometimes come up with explanations for actions or events all by themselves without having the show spoon feed it to them. And yes the narrative is coming out a bit slowly, but it seems some people are never satisfied-- I'd much rather have a show take 5 or 6 episodes to worry about matters like character development, background, plot, pacing, etc than have it kicked into eighth gear from episode one and make it more like 24 than a show that is actually suspenseful and thought-provoking. I think the people who enjoy Flask Forward are the ones who are patient and understanding of the massive undertaking that such a show is, and the ones who dislike it are mostly Lost fanboys and people who are frustrated because the show is structured a lot differently than the instant gratification shows they're used to seeing.

So how did they know they came around exactly 137 seconds later???? What's exact about coming around? Dimitri woke well before Mark, because he got out of the vehicle before Mark...unless he was thrown out then he'd be dead or seriously injured. I think you need to face the fact that the writers of Flashforward didn't think very deeply about any of this. As all they have is video evidence, the 137 seconds must be an approximation.

As normal it seems there's a lot of ADD hatred flying around again. I for one am quite intrigued. Yes its silly in places- my wife and I have both been joking how we better now blackout for 137 secs or the house might explode. But it has set up some interesting questions already and for gods sake its not a problem if something takes a few epsiodes to get going. Watch season 1 of Lost again- nothing really happens for 12 episodes! On a related note the comment about Lost fanboys hating this is unwarranted. I'm the most hardcore of Lost fanboys but I want to eat this up because ITS SCI FI and believe it or not I AM A GEEK- its like saying I can't like Star Wars cos I like LOTR. Its bollocks. Far as I'm concerned if it keeps being mildly entertaining its still better than 99% of the dross on TV. I'm more than willing to give it a chance, something it seems our impatient viewer and his friends above just can't be bothered with. Plus it did end witha cool black tower spewing god knows what over Somalia at the time of US involvement there. Intrigued I am.
