The Prisoner remake gets premiere date

Mark your diaries – the new take on The Prisoner is arriving in the middle of November…

Published on Sep 30, 2009

AMC has confirmed that its new take on the classic TV series The Prisoner will begin on Sunday 15th November in the US. AMC will kick things off by broadcasting the first two episodes consecutively, and then the rest of the miniseries will play out over the following two nights. Two episodes will broadcast each evening.

The new version of The Prisoner, of course, sees Jim Caviezel stepping into the Patrick McGoohan role as number Six, and Ian McKellen will play number Two. Also in the cast are Jamie Campbell Bower, Lennie James, Hayley Atwell and Ruth Wilson.

ITV will be broadcasting the show in the UK, although it's not as yet announced its own transmission plans. Given that it's also co-produced the show, we can't imagine that the UK debut will be too far behind. News on that as we get it.

The same No. 2 each week? If so, the McKellen is a good choice. Or are we going to get the who's who of British character actors like in the previous version? That would be a lot of fun. I vote for these number twos: Stephen Fry (who of course did a great turn in "The Laughing Prisoner" in the 80s), Simon Pegg, David Tennant, John Cleese, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren. I'm sure everyone has their own wish-list. Is there anyone still alive who did the role last time round?

I'm coming in with low expectations based on the extended trailer. Maybe it will surprise us in the end, I hope.

Personally I really quite enjoyed the trailer that I saw (about 6min long, not sure if that was the extended or not), obviously it wasn't the original and it wasn't a carbon copy of it (thank fruit bats).

Hopefully this will be an updated show for modern times. The premise suits the era we find ourselves living in and the chosen actors are above average on the talent scale, so here's hoping...
