Lost season 6: don’t expect all the answers

Simon Brew

Lost's executive producers won't be ticking all the boxes come the end of the upcoming season 6...

Published on Sep 14, 2009

Slashfilm is reporting that Lost executive producers Carlton Cuse, Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz have been talking about the upcoming sixth and final season of the TV show, and they'd declared pretty much what we suspected: the final season is not going to have all the answers that the show has thrown up over the past half decade.

The trio were attending a music and arts festival in Seattle, and the confirmation that all the answers aren't going to be coming is no surprise at all, simply because Lost has generated so many questions, you suspect that a season of twice the length would be needed to even attempt to tackle them.

Furthermore, Carlton Cuse has hinted that while the sixth season will close off the television show, Disney is still likely to do something else with the Lost franchise in due course. Again, it's hard to be too surprised by this, but it does leave you wondering just what state the assorted storylines will be in by the time the programme does draw to a close. Are we looking at a movie? A further videogame? Battlestar Galactica-esque prequel movies? We suspect we'll only start finding the answers out to those questions once Lost has breathed its last - for now - on the small screen next year...

DAMN!!! That said they have made a few missteps over the years and its better to just let those sleeping dogs lie and concentrate on getting the important stuff right. I also like the idea of doing prequels/ sideline stories, there is plenty of scope for this, as long as they don't go re-writing everything again.

They were never going to answer everything. To be honest I dont want EVERYTHING answering, because guessing is the joy of Lost. In 10 years id like to watch it all again and still be trying to figure everything out. The reveal that the end of season 6 wont be the end does make me happy though. Id love a game that was actually good (although the end of the game is pretty awesome, especially when it was released before we knew about the time travel on the island). In an ideal world, the season finale would actually leave a massive cliff hanger, with a full film being released in cinemas a few months later. It always been a dream of mine that cinemas would show episodes of Lost/Sopranos/24 etc. In these big multiplex cinemas im sure they could spare a single screen to show 42 minute episodes of things each week, charging maybe £3-4 a time. It would absolutely bring the money in, and would help with people who simply download the show illegally.

Yeah when you know that one of the core characters was suppose to of been killed off in the first episode ( Jack ) you so know then with the rest of this show, people have been making it up on purpose ! It pisses me off ... :-(

... That and cool, can I just say gudge 1 has given us one of the best ideas this century ? Dude why don't they every week play episodes of some of biggest TV shows at the movies ? They could just tied them into the major feature and make a matinee out of them like they did back in days of thirties, forties and fifties ! That could make up for lot if didn't cost us much else to go in and see both ! That's bitching idea ...

Im sure theres some sort of copyright issue that would inhibit it though - but i would love to see it happen. Theres not many things more beautiful than Lost in HD, so imagine it on the big screen. I have to disagree about the show being made up as it goes along though. While they write specific dialogue and character arcs from series to series, then overall story of the show has always been the same. All it would have been would have been Jack dying at the start and another character getting his arc. Same with Ben - he was only intended for 6 episodes, but because he was awesome they kept him in, using the arc of another future character.

@Simon - while I appreciate the source is from fairly recently, the idea that not everything will be explained has been out in the open since just after S5 finished. @Discrespective - ehh... No. Jack was going to be killed off in an early draft of the script, but his role and key plot points were to be picked up by Kate. And what do you mean, "making it up on purpose"? There's never been a secret that the overall game plan has been in place since S1 but the details of how they get there are adaptable based on what will be the most thrilling, inventive and narratively sound way to tell the story. Why is that a big deal?

Sorry, what Gudge said.

Whilst I appreciate the sentiment of Gudge's cinema/tv shows idea, I don't really see it flying - do you? An individual could stay at home and download the show for FREE (if illegally), as they already do - or pay £3/4 to watch at a cinema, which if you are into Lost, 24, South Park, Family Guy and Heroes, would cost you a pretty penny. Nice thought though... Yes. This posting has no point. My apologies. Ramble Shmamble.

Andy - I would definitely pay, every week, to see Lost in the cinema. But you knew that already. ;)

AndyBee - I regularly visit torrent sites, and regularly find films of excellent quality before or as they are available in the cinema. For the films i care about i still go to the cinema (which is 50+ times a year). Now the major point i am making here is that the cinema can bring that extra profit from me, whereas shows that only grace our TV screens I am happy to download. So if they were to say charge me £3 a go, thats roughly £60 a year just from me that they wouldnt have received otherwise (not taking into account the fact i will buy full season boxsets once the shows finally draw to a close). Also, im not saying that i expect any of this to ever happen - its just a pipe dream for me.

@Sean Fracture 1 - In Season 1 of Lost when Claire found out she was pregnant she was frighten to tell her Mom about it because of what her Mom would do to her if she found out ! Claire knew her Mom would be pissed ! Tom Sizemore pissed ! The thing is it turns out in Season 3 Claire's Mom was in no position to do anything to her because she was in a coma ! Huh ? Why would somebody be afraid of someone in coma ? Cool ? They're sleeping ! See man ? It makes no sense and proves what I've been saying that you so know with most things they've been making this show up on purpose ! It pisses me off :-(

@Discrespective. Every single show in THE WORLD makes things up as they go along. At least lost had some kind of plan of how they would get from A to Z even if every single little tiny detail wasn't worked out from day one. Stop whining! Hey, at least it's not Heroes!

I ain't whinning cool ? And I agree all shows in the world make shit up as they go along, I was just pointing that out to people who don't get it, that this show is made up and that's what stings when they continually make out that they haven't been

Gudge, I totally understand the idea, but I dare say that you, Seanfracture and your close friends are not enough to warrant opening the cinemas for these shows. I may be wrong, but I reckon the general downloading population and joe shmoe on the street are happy to get their content for free (ish) Think about it, I'm paying £35 a month for Sky and my favourite shows are Heroes and 24, and they are broadcast 1-2 weeks after the US. Like I say, great idea, but I just don't see how it could fly with the non-geek, non-niche market where the cinemas make their money Lost 3D on the other hand...

@Discrespective - I'm sorry man, not to be rude but did you even read what I wrote? I don't doubt that little plot details, like Claire's mum being in a coma, have been adapted and changed. Even bigger things have changed (Michael Emerson's role as Ben). But I do definitely believe - and there is evidence in the show - that the game plan has been there. I'm not blind to things like this, I just don't think it matters a huge amount when the story being told is this rich, deep and amazing.

Was it not the case that Claire was more scared of telling her bitch-face aunt? I might be wrong. Besides, maybe she is a great believer in the whole 'coma-victim-can-hear-you' thing and didn't want to give her mum the bad news which may worsen her condition. Claire's a bit flighty like that. Regardless of whether it was an original plot point or not, it still works. I fully agree with that SeanFracture fellow that there has been a plan from A to B all along, though the subplots might have been tweaked a little along the way. It doesn't matter. IT. STILL. WORKS. And is excellent. Now if you want to talk about shows with no direction or narrative and the writers make it up week to week, lets talk Heroes...

Orry to piss on anybodies bonfire, but Claires mum wasn't in a coma at the time 815 crashed. When she was in a coma, Claire was the black haired goth (goddamn she looked hot), but when she was pregnant she was blonde. Mummy had woken up! As for Lost in 3D... I'm all for that. Lost, in 3D, at IMAX, where there's a full on lesbian scene with Kate and Claire, then I walk on set.... It's going to happen!

Thanks Gudge - I watched it not too long ago, but I forget these things! Thanks for clarifying. As for Lost 3D and the possibility of fantasy scenes... I'll plead the fifth on that...

Sorry Gudge I'm on your side but Blonde pregnant Claire goes to visit comatose Mom at the end of the episode that starts with her in goth mode. Months obviously pass cos she's clearly showing in the final scene. Its never mentioned whether her mother woke up prior to Claire getting on 815. Still on yours and sean fractures side though, these little details while inconsistent are hardly representative of the overall plot of the show.

Damn, u are right. I just rewatched the scene and she is just about to drop... Now this doesnt mean that she wasnt scared of telling her mother. In fact, the scene we are takling about is the scene where she is in tears telling her mother she is pregnant. She tells her right then, obviously it means a lot to her. Iv never spoken to anyone in a coma, but im sure i would if a loved one was in that situation - some doctors say they can hear you. "but she said she was too scared to tell her mother" i hear you say? While she did technically tell her mother and it will have been emotional for her (warrenting being scared of telling her), she also didnt really tell her. It was said past tense. the Lost writers rule..... (i squirmed out of that quite well)

Really not impressed with Jacob & Nemesis speaking in modern american accents. This when Sayid has to fake an Iraqi accent (he is a brit) and with Jin talking Korean that Koreans can't understand - so why would the producer screw up Jacob's accent? - if it has no meaning then I am not happy as they sound totally out of place. The US did not exist 'as is' in the timeline shown!
