The fate of Stargate DVD movies

New spin-offs for both Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis are written – but why aren’t they moving into production?

After the success of Stargate SG-1 direct to DVD movie spin-offs Continuum and The Ark Of Truth, we'd expected that further releases spinning out of the franchise would follow in the same way. And yet that's not happened. Instead, a retooled version of Children Of The Gods has hit the shelves, but there's little sign, it seems, of further direct to DVD adventures anytime soon.
SciFi Wire, however, has got to the bottom of the mystery. It reports that, after a chat with Stargate: Universe's Robert C Cooper, the executive producer of the show, that scripts for further adventures are actually ready to go. However, there are a couple of factors holding things back.
Firstly, inevitably, much of the attention where Stargate has been concerned has been in getting Universe off the ground, and thus the majority of efforts are being pointed in that direction. Secondly, the financial problems that the industry as a whole has been hit with has meant that the direct-to-DVD market isn't quite as lucrative as it once was, and thus studios are being more cautious before investing in new productions.
The new scripts are for spin-offs from both SG-1 and Atlantis, with the latter set after the end of the final season of the show. We'd do well, we suspect, to be seeing either of them in the next twelve months. Still, there's the small matter of Stargate: Universe premiering on October 2nd to content ourselves with...
