Heroes season 4: casting news and brand new trailer

Simon Brew

Robert Knepper is on board for the full run of Heroes season four, and there’s an extended preview trailer in town, too…

Few shows, surely, are feeling the pressure as much as Heroes as it enters its fourth season. In the past year, we've seen The Sarah Connor Chronicles, My Name Is Earl and Pushing Daisies, amongst others, get canned, while Heroes has somehow managed to keep going. This is in spite of reviews for season two and three of the show that have bordered on unfriendly, and a pervading feeling that Heroes has lost its way massively since its excellent opening season.

Heroes season four is, therefore, make or break time for the show, and already it's not been helped by the news that Bryan Fuller has left the show for a second time. Many people were hanging on to the fact that Fuller was returning - it was he, after all, who scribed many of the show's best episodes - as the best chance Heroes had.

Fuller had enjoyed some influence over the shape of season four before he moved on, of course, and the full trailer for what's the fifth volume of the show, Redemption, has now been made available. It shows us an awful lot of Prison Break veteran Robert Knepper, who it's now been confirmed will be a regular character on the show rather than in it for the originally planned six episode run. It also plays a little on what we guess is what the producers believe is season four's marketing trump card, namely Claire Bennett going to college. The lesbian storyline is not far behind.

Here's the new trailer, anyway, and the new season premieres in September. Here's hoping that Heroes can finally pull itself out of the rut that it's firmly found itself in...

Looks a lot like same old, same old. Again. Including stupid stunts by Claire, presumed death [really, anybody think Noah will die for good?], Peter being, well, Peter, idiotic banter ['There is no such thing as out, not for people like us.']. Oh, and Hiro, too. Not to forget that again they don't seem to know where to go, hire him for a 6-ep arc, then make him a full member for the full season. Throw in more X-Men rip-off ... sorry, that surely is "ref/verence".

Simon Brew, clearly, loves commas.

I can't say i found Season 3 to be unenjoyable - it was entertaining enough. Sure it wasn't a patch on Season 1 (or 2 - bite me!) I think heroes' has become somewhat too self-referential and convoluted. It needs to just scale all of the "who's sylars mum/dad/brother this week and all of the intertwining BS we get with claire/angela/noah/Daphne" etc that people don't care about. AND FOR GAWS SAKE MAKE NOAH A STABLE CHARACTER! if that dude keeps switching sides so often he's gonna get a shock.

I enjoyed season 3. Not nearly as much as season 1, but a far sight more than 2. This trailer piques my interest greatly (although I am really tired of Ali Larter's unending resurrections).

I must admit i'm really excited to see what they're doing with Sylar, but otherwise, i'm not particularly interested. I loved Season 3, in actual fact I think more than Season 1, I might just be a Sylar fangirl however.

It has become clear that this show is like a bad comic that producers, and the network refuse to scrap. I had grown quite attached to it during the first season, and only thought it would get better. Although I am not a writer, I am a reader. I'm not the only person who can spot poorly used themes from the X-Men, and damn near every bad soap opera on television. I want to fall in love with this show again, but with all of the on set turmoil and the firing of writers at the sleightest whim, I don't how this show can make a come-back. Hope they prove me wrong.
