Torchwood gets a fourth series?

Simon Brew

Has Torchwood been greenlit for a fourth season in 2010? And what shape would the next series take?

Published on Jul 28, 2009

It's fair to say that Torchwood: Children Of Earth has proven to be something of a success for the BBC. Torchwood had, over the its first two runs, managed to increase its ratings, but the switch to BBC One, combined with a five episode arc over five nights, can easily and fairly be described as a triumph. Aside from perhaps the penultimate episode of this year's Ashes To Ashes, it's the best thing we've seen on British telly all year.

This, of course, inevitably led to speculation over a fourth series for the show, which Russell T Davies had earlier suggested was ready to go, awaiting a green light. Well, given that Children Of Earth has now also enjoyed success in America, it seems that the nod has been given for further Torchwood adventures, even if it's not entirely clear just yet what form they will take.

Leaving aside the fact that Captain Jack has fled the planet, meaning a pregnant Gwen is the last surviving member of the Torchwood team (Ianto won't be returning, no matter how loud the fan protests get), there's the decision to be made as to how many episodes to make for Torchwood's fourth run. What's been revealed by Russell T Davies (although there's some debate as to whether he was announcing the decision or speculating on it) is that the show will be getting a full season, which suggests that we're not going to get an ‘event' season such as Children Of Earth next year.

What hasn't been expanded upon is just how many episodes that season will entail. Will the show be returning to the 13-episode format? Is it just us that would warm to the idea of perhaps having a shorter season, followed by another five-day story?

We look forward to some kind of formal confirmation in the months ahead, and wait with interest to see where Torchwood goes from here...

Whatever form it returns in i'll definately be watching it. But the 13 episodes would seem more sensible as they need to start again. I'm expecting Jack will return but they need to build a new team, hub and with brand new characters a 5 night series might not work as well as Children of earth. And about Ianto's death i thought Ianto was awesome and tosh and owen but killing them off makes the show unpredictable and you know that noone except Jack is safe.

I love this show. I just finished watching Torchwood Children of Earth and it was amazing. Can't wait to see more of Torchwood with Jack, Owen, Gwen and the new characters that surely will be introduced in the fourth season. The best series in television. Thank you.

As someone who thought S1 and S2 were drivel, but Children of Earth was superb, I'm in two minds - if it can maintain the quality I'd happily see another season, but I'd doubt it, and I'd probably say that if Torchwood were to quietly die now, it would go with considerably more dignity than it had before and be remembered with more respect in years to come.

Jack definitely will be back to the earth and rebuild Torchwood that will be different in its form.

RTD said at Comic Con that Jack is "an Integral part of Torchwood" which to me sugests he will return, but RTD always plays his cards close to his chest, so who knows. I thought I would hate a 5 episode series this year but the writing, acting, effects were the best science fiction I have seen. I would love 13 episodes again but I also want that incredible level of quality

if there is another series, it will be set a good few years after Children of Earth me thinks, Jack will return after coming to terms with things, and then him and Gwen will form a new Torchwood... I would watch that..

Obviously Jack will return, and with a new crew. I reckon Gwen will be there too along with a few of the characters in Children of Earth. Plenty of options: Jacks daughter Alice, Lois, Gwen's Husband, and the obvious one: Johnson, the Government fixer. A proper series would be great. But it needs a real story arc along with the standalone episode former, just like US TV drama does so well.

"Is it just us that would warm to the idea of perhaps having a shorter season, followed by another five-day story?" I dunno, why not just make a 13 episode season and put a decent story arc through it... That way rather than having to cram a story into 5 days they can develop it over weeks, giving us hints at to what is going on...

I'd like to see series four open up with Jack still not back, and Gwen deciding to rebuild the Torchwood hub and team on her own. Maybe have Jack come back after three, four episodes.

there are allot of options that could take place in new sereis as there is alot of charcters that have the potential of joining torchwood . there is of course micky and martha and also lois abbiba who was in the 3 season . i also think that jack is a very important part of torchwood but i think if gwen and rhys set it it up it would still be as good

If it's anything like Children of the Earth, forget it! I'm not watching!! That was SO damn depressing. If I want to be depressed, I'll watch the news. I loved Torchwood because it was so surreal, while it had a darkness to it, there was something about it that was redeeming.
