Where Next For Torchwood?

Cameron K McEwan

Now that the dust has settled on Children of Earth, millions of people are left wondering: Is Torchwood coming back to our screens?

Published on Jul 13, 2009

Only last month Russell T Davies told an audience at a 'Q & A' session that a fourth series of Torchwood was "ready to go" and the show's future rested on how popular its third outing was to be. Many 'commentators' reckoned that this was the end for Captain Jack & Co. (and it was for some, sniff) but the ending of Children Of Earth certainly leaves the door open for many possibilities. It could end there but, more importantly, it could go on. Evidence?

Exhibit A: the audience figures
From Day One it was quite apparent the British public were hooked, with almost six million tuning in to BBC One (according to 'overnight' figures). Not only that, the show also screened simultaneously on BBC HD (getting around the 100,000 mark) and repeated later the same night on BBC Three (scoring well over 200,000). It should be noted that the 'overnights' do not take into account those who have recorded it for later viewing - these figures will be released in ten days time by BARB.

The figures for the rest of the 'series' continued in this remarkable style with a very healthy audience share (ranging between 24% and 27%) and all episodes featuring strongly on the BBC iPlayer. In comparison with other similar shows, the signs are very good: the average figure for a drama at this time of year is approximately 4.5M with a 20% share. Looking at how it performs against its current competition, Children of Earth was only beaten this week by Coronation Street and Eastenders.

Another important factor is the Appreciation Index (AI) figure, this is how a programme is rated in terms of 'quality' by the audience. An average rating for a drama is 77, whilst 85 and upwards is considered excellent. Children of Earth has gained figures of 90 and 91, never dipping below 88 - clearly the viewers are happy. (Doctor Who has not beaten 91).

As a last note, and something often overlooked in the UK, Torchwood is receiving much acclaim and very healthy viewing figures in the US - a factor that should be considered with regards to the possible funding of the series.

Exhibit B: the cast and crew
As we reported some weeks ago, Doctor Who supremo Russell T Davies would be happy to continue with Torchwood for the next ten years. Clearly Rusty D has a lot of lurve for the show and, judging by Children of Earth, he's still got a tank full of ideas and images to share. Both John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness) and Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper) have also expressed their desire to continue with their characters.

But if a fourth series was greenlit, the actors would be the only hinderance on starting production immediately. Barrowman is 'booked up,' as it were, until February next year (he's doing Around The World In 80 Days for Children In Need, La Cage Aux Folles on the London stage and then straight into Robin Hood: The Pantomime Adventure) and with Myles expecting a child in November it would seem filming is a long way off. That is, of course, if the production team continued with these two characters.

It's also worth noting that Russell T Davies is off to America though there's no reason why that should get in the way of his writing (well, until he finishes that Doctor Who film *coughs*).

Exhibit C: the merchandise
Merchandising should never be overlooked. Torchwood has already spawned an enormous amount of ancillary materials such as magazines, books, soundtracks, action figures and, not forgetting, DVDs. It's quite a collection for show that has run for such a comparatively short  time. Without wanting to sound like some kind of maniacal Eighties businessman, Torchwood ticks all the right demographic boxes for merch.

At the time of going to 'press', the BBC have remained quiet on the future but given the overwhelming evidence in favour of continuing, only the nuttiest of bookmaker would take a bet against its return. It may well return with some familiar faces - can I humbly suggest Liz May Brice (Johnson) and Cush Jumbo (Lois Habiba) from Children of Earth? - but Torchwood seems robust enough to continue anew.

It's format would seem to suit the five-night televisual event that the BBC are keen on and after Children of Earth it does seem that reverting to a thirteen-part series would not be the preferred option. Perhaps two five-night series a year? (Please??)

With Torchwood: Children of Earth yet to air in the US (starts on July 20) it would appear that the BBC will remain quiet until then. Though with the San Diego Comic Con (the biggest geek-fest this side of, well, anywhere) coming up later this month, perhaps an announcement could be made there.

And if I may make one more request (should anyone from the production team be reading this), can we get the opening theme tune back? I didn't half miss it last week.

I loved Torchwood's Children of Earth & love the show in general but was really upset they killed off Captain Jacks entire team now he's all alone. Just does not make sense why they had to do that.

Errr.... Gwen is still alive you know. Personally I would suggest that a 5 part story like CoE, would struggle for the next season, there is too much house cleaning to be done... there is no hub and no one to staff it, apart from new mum Gwen. Rebuilding the cast and bringing Jack back (if they do) is not something that would work particularly well in 5 episodes, it would have to be rushed and the show needs more than that. I would suggest going back to a 13 ep season, but there is nothing wrong with building a decent season arc, where some episodes can be scene setting for the "big bad" and others can be used to show us the rebuilding of torchwood. The only thing I demand is that they remember what made this so great, it was dark, it dealt with adult issues in a way that made sense, even the cop out ending was made hard and cruel, which took away the sting of it being a cheap trek style fix.

I felt drained after watching the last episode of torchwood, its been a long time since I enjoyed anything so much on tv. Questions to be answered 1 who did Jack marry 2 How come his grandchild did not inherit some of his immunity

If there is a new series, Jack won't be in it. Did you not realise, at the end, this was Jack's death, too. He's gone to the stars to be somebody else, a new start. Earth has nothing for him, now. He's lost too much.

It would make sense for a reconstituted team to include, as well as Gwen, any or all of Martha, Mickey, Lois, Bridget and Johnson because we've been at least introduced to them already. But what about the lovely PC Andy? I'd love to see him on the team. And he may no longer have a job with the police after joining in the rioting!

Nah, it will be back. It has new fans now, a healthy audience. I just hope it remains as brave and dark as Children Of Earth. For a primetime, consecutively screened BBC show this was astonishing. Totally unafraid to be exciting, adult and moral in content. I loved it. One of the best shows I've ever seen - and not just in genre TV either. Easily up there with quality US drama such as Lost, 24, Heroes etc. The show caught me by surprise. I didn't expect Ianto to die, and when he did I thought they'd find a cure. Ditto for Jacks grandson. And the whole "needs of the many against the needs of the one" plotting was cool. (essjayar.com for my review)

I doubt Torchwood will be back in the same format - there were tell-tale signs - particularly in RTD's interview on Torchwood DeClassified on S3 dvd where he said that the Hub was gone and wouldn't be put back because Ianto wouldn't be there. RTD has gone Stateside - at ComicCon he and David Tennant will announce the new Dr Who film which obviously will include Captain Jack? Most of S3 was set in London at Thames House - making it more Spooks orientated. I think with RTD in the US and the desperate need for the BBC to sell worldwide to keep their coffers up there is a strong chance that the programme could be Americanized - on a par with something as a cross between Spooks and Star Trek - CJ have flown off to the stars already! Then Captain John Hart would appear - for the American Buffy fans and so on ... I don't have a problem with that per se -- what I do have a HUGE problem with is the fact that RTD totally disrespected the fanbase by killing off Ianto. It was irrelevant to the storyline - RTD said drama should hurt - well Jack killing his own grandson was more than enough! Now the argument could be that had Jack not been so fragile at losing Ianto he wouldnt have made the decision to kill Stephen ... don't agree with that ... Ianto would have stood by any decision he was going to make to save the world. Finally - S3 became the Eve Myles Show and that is NOT acceptable! I think she should walk off into the sunset with boring Rhys and breed! But definitely bring back PC Andy along with Rhi and Johnny who were hilarious! How to bring back Ianto -- easy ... Captain Hart owes Jack big time because of Gray [btw do we assume he was blown up in the Hub completely?? And what about Myfanwy and Janet??] so CH needs to do something extraordinary going back in time to save Ianto and then beam him to whatever new starship they are on!! Or the Doctor could do the same just before he regenerates! A parting present to Jack for telling him he was wrong!? I dont care wtf they do - just bring back Ianto - cos no Janto = no Torchwood.

Ianto's Dead. End of story. The previous Torchwood article is right, his death was a perfect brutal shock. Exactly how it should have been, not some built up over seasons overtensed pointless build up. it was shocking and horrible and a lot more realistic and dramatic because of it. I think that "shit happens" should be Torchwoods motto. Dont forget the show can always pick up at another branch of TW, there are several. I'd love to hear about the one that just dissapeared. where did it go? a little like Torchwood: Atlantis.

Whenever writers, directors, and producers listen to the fanbase the result is wishiwashi or pure dreck. I've yet to stumble upon an exception.

"1 who did Jack marry" I forget her name but that was answered. They said she had died. "2 How come his grandchild did not inherit some of his immunity" I'm not sure it can be passed on. I'm not convinced it's genetic. When Rose brought him back I think he was mase static in time. In effect his cells are static in time, or more accurately they always revert to a specific point if damaged. If you checked out his DNA there wouldn't be a 'regeneration' gene or anything like that to pass on. That's my theory anyway.

"mase static" should read "made static".

I hope they continue the series. With Jack gone, gwen can rebuild the team. Since she is pregenant in real life have as well as in the tv world we could have her desk bound for the time being. This will allow her supervise the hub rebuild and work the computers. With the gear these people have she would always be in contact with her team. As she would be the new team leader when jack returns to a whole new team he would have to take orders from her and that would make for a new twist. I do have to wonder about the darkness of the stories though. It makes for more realistic stories but with all the darkness in the real world right now shouldn't we be able to escape this darkness in tv? I read alot of fiction and even these stories seem to follow a dark trend.

I really don't see it going anywhere. John Barrowman schedule is full up to January 2010 and who knows what else after that. In four months EM is going to give birth. She may decide to stay home for a while with the baby or she may decide to do something else. And if they do decide to go on with a series 4. By the time they script , film, post production it two years would pass and everyone would be saying - Torchwood what?

I guess it'a all up to the fans then. If we make a big enough stink they should bring it back; that worked for star trek back in the day.

I cry when they killed Ianto off and Jack kiss him. It really make me mad when they killed Ianto because he excempt Capt. Jack the way he is with no problem's at all. Now it seem he give up hope and just like Gwen said Doctor is sick humankind and the way they are that he left earth. I really hope that they bring Ianto back next season so he can help Capt. Jack get his hope and be more human again. Instead of running just like Gwen say!

I know Gwen is still alive cordas lol didn't mention her as she was expecting a baby & i didn't see how they could include her in any future episodes. Glad i wasn't the only 1 who shed a tear over CoE!

I was thrilled when they brought it back, I hope it returns for good, the best show in a long time. Why kill the golden goose.
