Doctor Who: Matt Smith to fight the Daleks

Simon Brew

Doctor Who’s ongoing reliance on the Daleks is set to continue for season five of the revived show…

Published on Jun 16, 2009

It's been widely reported - albeit without any official confirmation - over the past week that one of the first villains that Matt Smith will be facing when he gets the keys to the Tardis will, predictably, be the Daleks.

This is hardly a massive revelation, given that the Daleks have been dragged out for every season of the show since Doctor Who was brought back to our screens in 2005. But it doesn't, anymore, fill us with the joy that it once did.

This writer, for what it's worth, has been a fan of what Russell T Davies has done with the show, but the main area that he's not convincingly addressed for me is the reliance on recycling the same old villains. Come the end of season four, we had a belting penultimate episode, where the whole world looked doomed, but again the Daleks were beaten quite easily, and again they lived to survive another day. Because, simply, you can't kill the Daleks. It's clearly against the law.

Add in the recycling of the Cybermen in the last Christmas special, and I can't be the only one who was secretly hoping that the two big villains in the Doctor Who universe would be kept in the locker for at least a year or so. Especially as new show Steven Moffat boss has given us the best new villains of the revived show's run (the weeping angels, anyone?).

Now appreciating that introducing new monsters is easier said than done, there's also the greater problem here, in that the Daleks make lots of money for the BBC. Furthermore, with a pair of unknowns piloting the Tardis in the shape of Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, it does give the BBC a comfort blanket to have the Doctor's most iconic enemies turning up to do battle once more.

But does it help the show? I'd be the first to sit down and watch a Moffat-scripted Dalek episode, and I'd be fascinated to see if he can wring a strong tale out of them, given that we all know that both sides of a Dalek vs Doctor battle will survive to fight another day.

The only potential solution a mere mortal like me could offer would be that if they want to do this, they should really, really go for it, and perhaps even devote a full season - maybe in the style of Torchwood: Children Of Earth - to doing it properly, rather than going through the routine of building either the Daleks or Cybermen up, then promptly knocking them down. And some degree of lasting damage needs to come as a result, rather than everyone licking their wounds until the next time.

For me, ultimately, this is the biggest challenge facing Doctor Who right now. I'm perfectly happy with the new casting of the show, and the team of writers behind it is hard to argue with, too. But the quest to come up with a new foe worthy of the show's name must be near the top of the list to sort out.

Because, realistically, the Dalek-Cybermen-Dalek-Cybermen cycle surely has to stop soon?

This story first appeared in the Daily Star and subsequently 'widely-quoted'.

Oh dear how depressing I agree very much that although i love the daleks i am getting a bit sick of them, and seeing them too much tends to remove some of the perceived threat (At least form the viewers PoV). Perhaps putting a different stant on it and having the doctor having to workwith the daleks or something may make it more interesting (and afterall who wouldnt put that past the great Stephan Moffet!?)

Oh I am so sick of the sun coming up in the morning, its so predictable :( The Daleks (and to a far FAR lesser degree the Cybermen who have been used twice so far) are and always will be perennial enemies of the Doctor, complaining about that is like complaining that the Nazi's are mentioned in WW2 movies... Get over it. That said I think there is plenty of scope for using them differently in the show, more creative thinking like what was put into the Bad Wolf story arc, one thing I think that needs to be done is they need to be given more menace... they need to do more permanent destruction such as killing companions/ key story figures. There is no real sense of fear for long term companions in the new Who something that i think is missing. Oh and whats the story with the weeping angels? Why is every reviewer / writer on Who convinced that they where so brilliant? Everyone I know who saw the show thought it was at least OK but none of my friends (or who fans that I speak to) are clamoring for a return of them....

"but again the Daleks were beaten quite easily, and again they lived to survive another day" sounds just like classic Doctor Who to me.

1st off I for one adore Daleks & can never have enough of them, I'm sure I'm not alone in that. But yes they do get defeated way to easily & a whole season devoted to an ongoing battle would be tremendous.

Me ?!? Mate I'm still not over them still not wanting Paterson Joseph to play the doctor !!! Dude we all saw him in Neverwhere, he was the doctor in Neverwhere ! Why they didn't want him, I don't know ! What I do know it wasn't black thing since Will Smith is gonna play the next doctor ... ;-)

... Yeah no, I don't know why man it's so insanely difficult for them to come up with cool new frenemies for the doctor to face off with ! Like, I don't know, why can't the Master have an evil twin ?!? Dude, there's exceptionally cool idea ...

... or monkeys ! Buttloads and buttloads of scary, creepy looking monkeys !!! Make out the guys were once human and planet's ecosystem that they crashed on has reversed the evolution process so now they're angry primitive species with very advanced 56th century technology including the abilty to time travel ! Kinda like it is and it isn't, shut up, that movie was forty years ago man, Planet Of Apes storyline. We all have hundreds of these ideas :-)

i am really happy steven moffat has taken over cause then you get the mix of new monsters from him returning monsters from good quite popular doctor who writers and scripts for monsters like daleks and cybermen from people just sending scripts in

"But it doesn't, anymore, fill us with the joy that it once did." You damn sure aren't speaking for me.

The main issue for me is not the continual return of the Daleks (and Cybermen etc), rather the cop out/deus ex machina endings each time- literally with one push of a button/pull of a lever/spurious magic they are (far too easily) defeated. A massive build up followed by a total let down ending. So I’d welcome a Moffat produced Dalek story, if it’s well written and has a beginning, middle and a proper end.

The Daleks need to win ! leaving the Doctor limping away in defeat. They need to be a real threat but i'm more than happy for them to crop up each season . just no more deus ex machina endings RTD did a fabulous job of making them threating but the endings came to quick and easy.. Exterminate !

I agree the daleks need to kill a companion/someone close to the Doctor and reassert their nastiness.

I also don't mind them returning but treat them with the love and respect they deserve and give them a good script and plot. Love RTD though I do, he is also responsible for some rubbish and top of that heap and biggest underuse is Daleks in Manhattan - what a pointless story. I recently read 'Prisoner' of the Daleks' and this would have made a MUCH better Dalek TV story. Lets have less of the EPIC end of the world stuff (which becomes harder to top each season) and more stories of that sort of caliber

Don't think bigger. Think smaller. Let's have the Doctor deal with a small group of Daleks who are less omnipotent and not threatening the whole universe. Like some old-school daleks who need metal surfaces and can't climb stairs! The sort of Daleks that we used to see get defeated by a well-motivated band of unarmed humans. Maybe another story set on Skaro?
