Torchwood: Series 4 - "ready to go"

Cameron K McEwan

The third series of Torchwood hasn't even aired yet but the next one is prepared. And there's some news about the upcoming episodes...

Published on Jun 12, 2009

Last night saw a preview screening of the the first installment of Torchwood: Children of Earth at the National Film Theatre. The episode, titled Day One, was followed by a 'Q & A' with the show's creator, Russell T Davies.

During the session, Davies revealed that the fourth series is "ready to go" but is entirely dependent on how the third series performs. The showrunner also revealed that he would be willing to do the show for the next ten years and wanted more crossovers with its 'parent' show, Doctor Who. RTD also added that The Doctor is mentioned in the last episode of Torchwood: Children of Earth.

So far, early reviews - mainly posted on the social networking site, Twitter - are very positive with words like "awesome" and "brilliant" being bandied about whilst others have suggested that the opening episode is the best hour of Torchwood so far.

No definite date has been set for the UK transmission but Torchwood: Children of Earth will start broadcasting in North America on July 20h. The DVD/Blu-Ray release is set for July 27th.

And by series 5 I did of course mean series 4!

It'd also be good to pick up a new character or two (but not all at once, gradually)

does this mean the americans get to see torchwood before us. thats outragous its made with our licence fees, why should they get this before us. they get all there own shows before us because there made there. i dont think the bbc gives a stuff about its audience.

im glad torchwood are doing a proper story arc this time, and not before time either. but why are we only getting 5 episodes of torchwood, with doctor who only doing a few specials this year it seems a strange decision to make. can anyone enlighten me?

@fishboy -- I'm pretty certain that the UK gets all of our (the USA) shows as soon as we do, via bittorrent.

And vice versa.

@fishboy - unless I'm mistaken, the article says the US get this on 20 July. We started watching it on 6 July. Please read things carefully before making rash comments, or giving yourself a hernia :-)

Oops - hit the button too early lol! I meant to add that a UK show will always air before it is sold to the US (and vice versa) so not setting a transmission date does not mean we will get it later. It's just that clearly the US can schedule much quicker than we can lol!

i thinks torchwood is awosom and they should make a series 4 and they should make a new twist and make it better than all of them (torchwood rocks and always will)

It is strange that they are cutting back on both Torchwood and Doctor Who, especially considering they are very popular shows. I really hope they come back for a FULL series 4 that isn't only 5 episodes, though Children of Earth was extrememly amazing.

Re:ilurvdtennant They weren't cutting back on Doctor Who. It was a planned "gap year" to allow the new production team to get established (and it's apparently been in the works since at least 2007). Read Davies' book The Writers' Tale. DW is back with a full season next year. And if Davies is hanging around for more Torchwood (so much for him retiring from the Who franchise, huh) then I'd expect to see another full season of TW, though likely not till 2011 since you'd think they'd be filming the new season by now if they were doing one for 2010.

@fishboy and the rest - grateful American here. We're just glad the show airs here at all. I hope you DO always get first viewing rights.

@HughKingsley Absolutely Agreed! Torchwoood is an amazing show, and honestly, American's are lucky that we're allowed it here in The States. I mean, honestly, if it weren't for BBC America, I wouldn't watch TV at all. *Sigh...* We put out such crap shows these days. :(

I dont see the point in them making a series 4. Any true fan of the show wouldnt watch it after the crappness what was series 3.
