Doctor Who: New Companion Announced

The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it

The BBC have announced who will be accompanying Matt Smith in the TARDIS during 2010 - Karen Gillan. Seems like The Doctor has a thing for red heads...

Published on May 29, 2009

After months of speculation and debate, the BBC have announced today that Scottish actress Karen Gillan will be the 'companion' in Series 5 of Doctor Who.

Gillan is no stranger to the world of The Doctor as she previously appeared as a 'Soothsayer' in last year's episode, The Fires Of Pompeii. On the prospect of joining Matt Smith the twenty-one year old said, "I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it. Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him – I just can't wait to get started!"

Incoming showrunner Steven Moffat stated: "We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too."

Executive Producer and Head of Drama BBC Wales, Piers Wenger added: "when she auditioned alongside Matt we knew we had something special. It is a partnership that is ready to take on the universe!"

Series 5 of Doctor Who is due to be broadcast in Spring 2010 with filming beginning next month.

WTF! Could this show get any younger? Could they replay the same old tired formula anymore? The old series at least offered a variety of companions, from/with different planets, sexes and ages, and kept it interesting and new.I might as well be watching US TV with its emphasis on the 18-24 demo. I find that I am not caring much about watching the new regeneration. BLECH!

So...a Doctor in his late 20s, and a companion in her early 20s...? Back to 1982 then, surely, miladyelfin? Fine by me. Welcome to the new team.

Thanks, Dvorak...nice bit of perspective there...I didn't mind so much then, because the Doctor was still much older than me! By ten years or so, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. It's just getting harder for a slightly more mature me to relate to these youngsters...Eccleston and Tennant both fall within 9 years of my age, so I can still relate. But, I have kids older than Matt Smith! And as much as I try to sell myself the old "he's really 9xx years old" I am just not buying it with the visual of Smith and new companion. Oh, well...there is always the past to revisit. ;D

... You Know What Dude ? The Idea That The Doctor Is 900 Year Old Timelord, That Looks Like 18 Year Old Kid Is Such Bitching Cool Concept That Shit, They Really Should Be Able To Pull It Off But Only If They Remember To Play With It A Bit ! And They Won't ! That's Wrong With This Casting ! Instead Of Getting ... "... Cor Lovely, It's The End Of World. Been Long Between Ends Of Worlds, I Was Getting Lonely. Well, Come On, I'm Getting You Out Of Here ... " " You ?!? But You're Just Kid ! " " Yeah ! What Can He Do That I Can't ? " ... We'll Be Getting " ... Cor Lovely, It's The End Of World. Been Long Between Ends Of Worlds, I Was Getting Lonely. Well, Come On, I'm Getting You Out Of Here ... " " You Doctor ! Alright, Fine ! Tell Me What You First Want Me To Do ... " ... It's Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. :-(

Could it be so simple? The doctor had been getting younger and younger every regeneration since... well, since the first one. Only one or two have been older than the previous. Could it be that it's been worked into the story, that it's just part of how the doc regenerates? Until he becomes a child?

Fine, we'll see how she does. I can't really remember her from Fires of Pompeii but that's just because I haven't seen it again since transmission. As for the age thing, meh, she's not even the youngest companion the Doctor's ever had and it wouldn't even bother me if she was. Pretty young female assistant for the Doctor, news at 11, you know?

Thank God. At last, something to watch. I was getting tired of looking at Cathrine Tate and all of RTD's little boy toys.
