24: worst piece of casting news in the world ever

Is Freddie Prinze Jr about to join the adventures of Jack Bauer?

Published on May 28, 2009

We will, right now, get down on our knees and beg that this doesn't come true. With production on the eighth season of 24 about to begin, word has come via Reuters that the acting legend that is Freddie Prinze Jr is being added to the cast.

Freddie Prinze Jr. Surely that's three words, in that order, that nobody wants to see attached to a show they give two hoots about.

The report suggests that he'll be playing a regular character called Davis Cole, who is a Marine that's recently returned from duty. He's run CTU field operations, and has a desire to follow in the footsteps of Jack Bauer.

I think I'm about to cry.

Several other names have been added to the season eight cast list, including Slumdog Millionaire's Anil Kappor, Chris Diamantopoulos as the new chief of staff, Jennifer Westfeldt as a journalist and John Boyd as a CTU system analyst.

And Freddie Prinze Jr. I'd rather they gave him a third Scooby Doo movie to do instead.

The show returns next year. I suspect I'll spend the time behind then and now quietly sobbing, and wondering why he couldn't have got the call for a show I've no intention of watching. Surely some reality TV show out there needs another ‘celebrity'? He'd be good at that.

My plan would have worked, if it wasn't for those pesky kids...

I once saw Freddie Prince Junior on stage in London and he was actually pretty good.

NO! NOOOOOOO!!!! I promised readers that next year could not get any worse as the show had slumped as low as it could go! The producers obviously saw my final review and then thought! "HA! We'll show him! Freddy get over here! We got some field work for you to do!"

So the villain for next years 24 is, a man dressed in a monster costume?

Hmm, I wouldn't be too shocked if he actually turns out to be fine and everyone looks back wondering what all the fuss was about. Things have happened that way before.

The sum total of what I know about this guy is that he (at least at one point - not sure if he is still) was engaged to Sarah Michelle Gellar. But I would just like people to bear in mind that quite a lot of chuckling took place over the casting of Brian Austin Green in Sarah Connor Chronicles, and he blew our minds with his portrayal of a soldier with PTSD from hell.
