Merlin series 2 casting announcements

A series of guest stars join the cast of Merlin, as its second season gets closer…

Published on May 27, 2009

In spite of the fact that the first series left quite a bit to be desired, the BBC's Saturday night opus, Merlin, did enough damage in the ratings to get itself a second series. And with the show set to return later this year, that second run is currently in production.

As such, the show's producers have announced a series of guest stars who will be joining the show.

First up will be Mackenzie Crook, of The Office and Pirates Of The Caribbean fame, who will turn up in the first episode as Cedric, a man keen to befriend Arthur. Meanwhile, Adrian Lester - best known for Hustle - will be playing Myror, while Sarah Parish (Cutting It) will be a troll in the form of Lady Catrina. Finally, Charles Dance is set to pop up, too, playing Witchfinder Aredian.

The show is set to hit our screens again in the Autumn.

Hopefully the deal with NBC replaying Merlin in the US will allow them to have bigger budgets, better effects, and better stories.

The show was entertaining and had a cool English charm and great chemistry between the actors that made it work, what's with the Michael Bay-type obsession with big budgets. The problem with many geeks is that they all consider themselves elite film and tv critics who tend to criticise just to feel important, and tend to be obsessed with technical perfection at the expense of what it's really about, and that's the characters and story, the stories are good, involving concise, exciting character interaction, humour, conflict and character evolution. The Brits have always had great tv, Blackadder, Red Dwarf, young ones, Dr Who, Mighty Boosh, Extras, the Office. The yanks always feel the need to turn every Brit masterpiece into an American version, ruining the charm (yes, with bigger budgets) let's hope Merlin avoids the taint.
