Trailer for new V TV series lands: see it here

Simon Brew

The 1980s TV classic V gets a modern day makeover, and we’ve got the promotional trailer for the new version here…

"Embracing change is never easy."

Go back to the first, purest run of the television show V, and you're looking at a significant and excellent slice of small screen science fiction. V has been visited less successfully since that first miniseries, of course, and now it's getting a big budget remake courtesy of ABC.

The network has now released a near-three minute trailer of the show, and it's looking pretty bloody smart from where I'm sitting. Certainly, there's little skimping on the effects budget here, and the shots of the inside of the spacecraft are quite terrific.

There are some familiar small screen faces popping up in the trailer, but if ABC had wanted to whet the appetite for the full run of the show, then I'd suggest it's not done a bad job...

How can ANYONE say this looks good!? Rubbish CGI of blow-up inflatable space-ships. Blatant ripping-off from Independence Day & Jurassic Park & worst of all the laughably cheesy projected image of Diana (or whoever she is now) beneath the mothership. This looks like a full-on shitfest!

Um... I don't know what you are doing on Den of Geek. INDEPENDENCE DAY RIPPED OFF ITS BEGINNING FROM THE ORIGINAL V.

Independence Day took the same idea from the beginning of V & did its own thing with it by making the ships so large they were like huge walls casting shadows on the ground below + they caused minor earthquake tremors. By contrast this takes some of the way ID4 played with the opening of V & merely copies it. A way for the programme makers to say - "We're not merely copying the opening of the original V - we're doing are own thing with it" They're not - they are simply copying the way ID4 did its own thing with it. Looking at this again, the spaceships still look like dinky inflatable toys. There is admittedly some good CGI but there is also some really ropey looking stuff in there too. In fairness - the original V had some decent model shots & some more ropey looking stuff too. The image of 'Anna' beneath the mothership still looks as cheesy as hell. I'm still not optimistic but I guess I'll be giving it a look.

It's got an epic look, definitely. The effects look too CGI from the trailer. I prefer the original scout ships. Promising though!

I really hope that the "big reveal" of who/what the visitors are is taken care of in the pilot. The series should focus on the resistance afterward. Oh and I wish Morena Baccarin would grow her hair out again.

Uhm, Grrr, are you complaining that this new V is 'ripping-off' ID4 while, at the same time, agreeing that ID4 'took the same idea' from the original V? That's basically a self-defeating argument, no matter how much you try to justify it with 'shadows' and 'tremors' and whatever. And didn't 'V' used to stand for 'Victory' (being the tag of the resistance, and all) and not, in fact, 'Visitors' as in this new series? And what compels an otherwise beautiful woman to cut her hair like Harrison Ford? Ick.

Ok. So. This looks ok, but it won't last sadly I don't think. One thing to note though: independence day, V, everything they ALL ripped their intros off of Arthur C. Clarke's novel "Childhood's End" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Childhood's_End#Childhood.27s_End_in_other_media It's an amazing novel and the plot of this show seems to follow in that the aliens aren't really unveiled...non? Don't want to spoil the book because knowing what the aliens are makes the novel. It's a rip of too many things. Earth final conflict being another apparent inspiration/correlation.

I'm arguing that Independence Day took the same idea but did something different with it. By contrast, it looks as though the makers of the new V have been unable to come up with their own ideas of how to do something different with the way the spaceships turned up in the original V - so they copied the way ID4 did something different with it instead. PS - have heard of how V took the idea originally from Childhood's End - thanks Kitz - must read that one.

Forget the garbage... where is the pilot.... when will it be screened? I loved this TV show back in the 80s the 1st season was fantastic, after that it went down hill :( I have all the novels and the 1st few are great but after that they went down hill. I am just so glad they are re-making V rather than trying to dramatize the utterly crap Second Generation book that came out a year or so ago!

So that's what happened to Scott Wolf. I know I should reserve judgement until I see it... but this looks like a hot mess. Reminds me how utterly cool that original show was, though... there was a real icy glamour to Jane Badler that was utterly compelling and more terrifying than a thousand CGI ships. Ho-hum.

The original 'V' featured Jane Badler as alien leader 'Diana' and also a pre-Kruger Robert Englund as nice guy 'Willie'

The original 'V': it's looking a lot glossier this time round...
