Primeval heading for the big screen

Warner Bros picks up the rights to ITV’s Primeval, with a major Hollywood movie now in the works…
Published on May 15, 2009
ITV's hit Saturday night show Primeval has been enjoying a good slice of form over the past weeks. And while there was tabloid rumour that it may be for the axe due to its cost, this was swiftly nixed by show boss Adrian Hodges. Ratings have been good too, which no doubt helped.
Fast forward a week or two, though, and the show has received a very major shot in the arm. It's been announced this morning that Warner Bros has picked up the rights to the show, according to Variety, in a "high-six-figure deal". Among the producers of the film will be Akiva Goldsman, whose writing credits include A Beautiful Mind, Angels & Demons and, er, Batman & Robin. A writer is being brought in to pen a draft of the script, although it's too early to know who that is yet.
There's no fixed timescale for the movie yet, and it'll inevitably be moving the action to the US. But this is clearly a massive pat on the back for the show, and one that should ensure its survival for some time to come. Plus: does it put an end to Jurassic Park IV?
