Well, personally, I was hoping for an older actor, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now. (...but ANOTHER young, thin, white, male brunette? I hope he's got a strong personality 'cause, physically, he's very David Tennant.) That said, I had mixed feelings about the Paterson Joseph rumour...not because he's black, but because his ridiculous attempt at an American accent damn near ruined Jekyll for me.

I was hoping for an older, darker character, more in line with Moffat-stories. Oh well, we'll have to make do.

Maybe the new companion(s)? will be around 12-or maybe it will be Wilf, to balance out the (too!) young Doctor?;D Personally, I just find myself not that interested in watching after Tennant's tenure.

As was stated before ridiculously underwhelmed. I hoped it would be Paterson Joseph but America has got me too hopped up on change at the moment lol. I think the beeb probably gave it a lot of thought and decided that Britain just isn't ready for a black time lord yet. And remembering the reception that Freema Agyeman got as Martha from a good part of the community that might have been wise so this might not have been the right time. But there were other fantastic choices and the BBC had a chance to do something really special here but...ehh. I was hoping for someone a little older and on a youtube page one of the earlier comments said it might be Jason Statham. I got a little upset but I might have taken him now presented with the new choice.We'll have to see how he performs it could be great. They'll have to be careful about how they personify this new doctor and who they choose as the new companion(s). But if they do it right it could end up being fantastic. Fingers crossed!

He does seem VERY similar to David Tennant, but being written and shaped primarily by moffat could help with some nice contrast, in my opinion RTD and Moffat's styles contrast like HD DVD and Blu Ray, BBC and ITV, Left and Right, Obama and Mcain and so on and so forth in that order.

Why do you assume the Eleventh Doctor won't be a darker Stephen Moffat character? He's being written by Stephen Moffat, isn't he? The network doesn't cast the lead. They listen to the executive producers plans and express their opinions. I suspect given Moffat's successes for the net they won't veto much he believes in if it's not grossly over budget. Obviously Moffat cast someone who he believed was capable of expressing his vision and carrying off his style, and he has a history of making good choices. Since Moffat's style is almost always dark my guess is the character will slant dark but will, like all Doctors, have moments of witt and fun. The writer of The Empty Child, The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink and The Silence in the Library is not a network water boy and he is not a callous ratings hunter. My heart stopped when I saw this kid's picture because he was so different from what I had envisioned. But please, give Moffat some credit. The actor's 26, not 12, and there's a difference. I think he'll write him to be a 700 year old man trapped in a body that doesn't earn him a lot of respect, not a cutesy boy wonder. Until you actually see the show try to remember the person whose work you have seen - Moffat's - and expect more of the same.

Still, think this is pretty much a missed opportunity to freak out the squares.

Well, I finally got a chance to watch the Confidential, so I'd like to add to my own comments, above: yeah, I was hoping for an older actor (I always thought Sam Neill would've been an interesting Doctor) but, based on his 'It's exciting...nerve wracking? exciting? ...exciting,' I may well be sold on Matt Smith. I like the way he talks with his hands, too, and I hope he continues gesturing about like that in his performance. And is this the first time the role's been cast via an open audition? Odd. But, anyway, now comes the REALLY important question: what's his Doctor going to wear? ;-)

Im well surprised hes that young. I was sure he would be older than DT as river song said that he was young. but look at him he has definitley got it. Moffat will not let us down he is a fan as much as a writer. I CANT WAIT!!!!

I dunno, never heard of him before and was rather underwhelmed when I saw a photo of him on the news... seemed very Tennant like. However having seen the confidentail thing I was impressed, but they are going to show clips that make him look good rather than bad aren't they.... I will just wait and see how he does in the role, as I did with Tate.
