The Day Of The Triffids being remade
Cameron McEwan
The Triffiids are heading back to our television screens. This time in HD!
The BBC Press Office has just announced that the ‘cult’ 80s series The Day Of The Triffids, based on the John Wyndham novel of the same name, is to be remade.
To be broadcast in 2009, the BBC claim that 1951 publication will be “a modern, gripping adaptation” as well as being “fast paced, futuristic and electrifying.“ This comes hot on the heels of the remake of the similarly apocalyptic Survivors.
The Executive Producer of the production is no stranger to sci-fi, coming in the form of ex-Doctor Who producer, Julie Gardner. She comments: "The Day Of The Triffids is a classic title. I'm excited that its powerful story is being remade for television. We're hoping to attract a legion of fans as well as give nightmares to a new generation of viewers."
Commissioned by Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Fiction, The Day Of The Triffids will film in London and the South East later this year. Casting will be announced at a later date.
The BBC has a rich history of adapting The Day Of The Triffids; The novel was adapted for radio in 1953, 1957 and 1968 with a television production following in 1981.
