Doctor Who: Paterson Joseph set to be named as new Doctor?

Simon Brew

With odds slashed and speculation mounting, is Mr Joseph about to be named the 11th Doctor Who?

Published on Nov 25, 2008

It was on 14th October that the name Paterson Joseph first cropped up in relation to the role of Doctor Who. By that time, David Tennant hadn’t made the announcement that he was quitting the role, but nonetheless, speculation arose that Joseph – who starred in Steven Moffat’s Jekyll – was in line for the keys to the Tardis.

On that same day, we spoke to Paterson Joseph’s agent, who said to us that “If Paterson had the part, it would have come through us, so I think that's a no...". You can read our story here.

However, in spite of that denial, speculation has begun to rise again, to the point where at least one bookmaker has stopped taking bets. Meanwhile, odds on Joseph have now been dramatically slashed, and if you believe the reliable folks at Comic Book Resources (who have a good track record on this sort of thing), then Joseph has been given the role already.

In their story here the site says that not only has Joseph been cast, but he has also accepted the part. And for good measure, the article also reveals that the Tardis console room will be getting redesign for 2010. This could, if true, faciliate the shooting of the show in high definition for the first time, something that the BBC and Russell T Davies had held back on due to the amount of work that would need doing on the key sets.

Now? We sit back and wait. The announcement may yet take some time…

Oh dear, call me racist if you so like but I really do not want a black Doctor. I so hope this is wrong :-(

I would have thought that the BBC would want to hold off on an announcement until after the Christmas Special is broadcast, because a large part of the publicity for The Next Doctor will surely be of the is he/isn't he? variety, regarding David Morrissey's character. However, it's no secret any more: Paterson Joseph IS the Eleventh Doctor.

I've long speculated that the end of the Davies era will feature a big ol' TARDIS console room explosion, or a self-destruct sequence, and then the TARDIS getting its own regeneration scene. RTD loves inserting traditional action movie beats into the DOCTOR WHO milieu , and that would be right up his alley.

God, Rich Johnston will be unbearably smug if this Paterson Joseph prediction pans out.

Never mind a black president, a black Doctor Who proves we are in the 21st century!

Oh brother. Can you say "Stunt cast because Obama got elected?" The BBC has always been far-left, and they have just reinforced their true PC colors again.

Not necessarily an advocate for Joseph, but I hope the next Doctor is played by a black actor, just to annoy the racists. First Lewis Hamilton, then Obama, next: Doctor Who for the hat-trick!

'I could have two heads, or no head. The trouble with this is, you never know what you are going to get.' He is a timelord from Gallifrey who, when he regenerates, has every single cell in his body change. Of course the Doctor can be black, or any other colour. Paterson Joseph is a great actor and should be a great Who. Call me a rational, thinking human being, but I hope this article is right :-)

I notice Kardwell, you didn't mention Clarence Thomas, the first black U.S. Supreme Court Justice...Or doesn't he count because he's a conservative and not a flaming liberal like Obama???

And while I'm at it..IF this story is true..Why NOW? Why not sooner if not to do a blatant PC stunt cast? On a different note, Joseph is already doing the sci-fi drama "Survivors", so I would think that might be problematic casting himtow do two full time TV shows at once.

And Yeah For All You Haters Out There, It's Not How He Looks, It's What He's Like ! I Really Don't Care If Dr Who Is Black, All I Care About Is How He Acts ! If He Still All Fucking Cool Crazy Charm, Then Shit He's Still The Doctor !!! Dude ...

I so hope he gets it. PC has nothing to do with it; I saw him as the Marquis de Carabas in "Neverwhere" and he was *awesome*. If he could do that, he could do the Doctor too. Demographically, his odds are good -- statistically, the average Doctor is a Londoner in his mid-40s, and guess what? So's Paterson Joseph! ;-)

I do like Paterson Joseph, he's a great actor and I've enjoyed watching him in a number of things. However, whether its PC or not, or Obama related or whatever is irrelevant to the fact that a black Doctor just does not seem to fit... At all. The Doctor is a quirky, eccentric white guy. I know I'm not the only one who thinks that..

Nice to see people focusing on his skin colour rather than his talent! Let me guess, the vast majority would rather the doctor be a slim caucasian male, just like the last two? The doctor is not a "quirky white guy"...he's a frikking alien that adapts as per his life cycle! anyone that reads the original books will see vast differences between that and the TV incarnation. Can all the racists on here just f*** off back back to their forum boards for the BNP...scum!

I really am going to miss David Tennant and while I don't want him to go I know I don't want him to be replaced but some idiot, especially if it's just because he's black. Paterson Joseph is not that good anyway, and I'm black and I don't want him. My first thoughts were either Harry Lloyd or Richard Armitage because Steven Moffat was taking over as Head Writer and I thought people who can bring out a dark side would really work well with him. However now I think Charles Aitken would make a great new Doctor. I know that this will be totally out of the blue, but with Eccleston and Tennant both being surprise castings I really think this guy could pull it off. He was born in England and grew up in America. He graduated from RADA and I saw him in Othello as Iago at the Lyric Hammersmith. I just thought he could make a really good Doctor. Especially with Moffat taking over this could really work. He can really bring out a dark side. I know it sounds random but it really could work, believe me. Look him up, he's not done much but he's got 'next big thing' written all over him.

I'm a Black American Whovian who's spent half his life watching Doctor Who. A Black Doctor IS stupid stunt casting unless the actor is really good. Patterson Joseph will always be the idiot who didn't believe the Daleks were real until it was too later. If it's not Chiwetel Ejiofor then just get somebody good for the role. One Black Doctor after 10 white ones IS stupid stunt casting. Same with them possibly turning him into a woman. This is Doctor Who not Deep Space Nine.
