Doctor Who: Steven Moffat on casting the Doctor
Simon Brew
Want some clues as to the next Doctor Who? The man who has to make the casting decision has been talking...
It’s been a week now since David Tennant announced that he would be quitting Doctor Who next year, once the previously announced special episodes had been filmed. And it’s fair to say that it’s been a week filled with plenty of rampant speculation, of which we, of course, have taken no part in whatsoever.
However, the man who does have to make the decision on the next Doctor Who, Mr Steven Moffat, has, according to The Sun, talked about one or two ideas for casting the role, way back in 1999. Moffat is quoted as saying that “Although I loved Peter Davison and Paul McGann, probably the best two actors in the role, I don’t think young, dashing Doctors are right at all … He should be 40-plus and weird-looking — the kind of wacky grandfather kids know on sight to be secretly one of them.”
This, of course, would hark back to the classic Doctor Who days, when actors such as William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee were in control of the Tardis. Not for nothing are those three generally regarded as the some of the best to have played the Doctor, if not the best.
Moffat, meanwhile, also admitted that “any actor with the ‘right stuff’ is unlikely to be completely unknown”.
The odds on David Morrissey, meanwhile, continue to shorten…

Re: Doctor Who: Steven Moffat on casting David Tennant’s replacementEccept he made this comment back in 1999. I'm not sure that it is relevant anymore.
Re: Doctor Who: Steven Moffat on casting the DoctorA lot's changed since this statement, including Moffat pretty much directly contradicting it. But if he'd made that statement since getting the job, I'd think, hey, Bill Nighy's still in with a shot.
