The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal odds
Simon Brew
With David Tennant quitting Doctor Who, it hasn't taken long for speculation about his successor to begin...
Less than 12 hours after David Tennant announced that he was stepping down as Doctor Who, and already the bookies having started to put up prices on who is going to be the next iteration of the world famous Time Lord.
According to Paddy Power, the running favourite is currently Patterson Joseph, whose agent put down the earlier rumours to us of his being linked with the part. David Morrisey, shortly to appear in the Christmas special, is currently running as second favourite, with James Nesbitt, John Simm and Russell Tovey following in quick order. At the other end of the scale, the long bets are Christopher Eccleston at 40/1, Hugh Grant (again!) at 100/1 and Robbie Williams at 150-1.
The full list of current Paddy Power prices is…
3/1
Patterson Joseph
5/1
David Morrisey

James Nesbitt
8/1
John Simm
10/1
Russell Tovey

Chiwetel Ejiofor
33/1

Dean Lennox Kelly
66/1
Christopher Villiers
80/1
Ricky Gervais
100/1
Vinnie Jones
Hugh Grant
150/1
Robbie Williams
For purposes of comparison, when speculation was rife back in June that David Tennant was about to flee the Tardis, these were the odds offered then by William Hill:
2/1
Robert Carlyle
4/1
Jason Statham
6/1
James Nesbitt
7/1

10/1
Julian Walsh
12/1

Gambling, of course, is a terrible thing to do. But we might go and have a sneaky fiver on Aidan Gillen anyway…

Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddsI've said it before, and I'll say it until someone at the Beeb listens - Richard Coyle for Who! You know it makes sense ;o)
Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddsI’m not sure how to interpret this one, but …

Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddsJonathan Ross for 'Dr.Who, Georgina Baillie as his assistant, and Russell Brand as 'The Master'
Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddsIt's time to change things up - a black doctor, maybe a female doctor. Although, I would love to see Paul Bettany in the role, he'll always be Chaucer!
Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddsi've said it before and i'll say it again Russell Brand would make a great doctor maybe unlikely now but he would be the most interesting choice and with the right amount of control his portrayal would be legendary
Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddsI can't fathom why Christopher Eccleston is on this list. He was the Doctor prior to David Tennant. Heading backwards just doesn't seem right. On the other hand, Anthony Head would make an interesting Doctor
Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddsAidan Gillen? Tommy Carcetti as Doctor Who? That'd be friggin awesome!
Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddsI'm in favor of Robson Green, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, or Alan Davies. Or Robbie Williams.
Anthony Head has been a baddie on the show, he's be an odd Doctor. C. Eccleston - already done that, it would be strange.
Bill Nighy - Oh yeah. He'd be awesome. He's like the geek's geek, while still being cute. I'd love to see him go a little creepy for the Doctor.

Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddsI cant even begin to imagine how cool it would be to have Bill Nighy as the next Doctor- I've been saying this to my friends for months now...
Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddsForget Bil Nighy (sadly) - there's no way the Beeb will go 'older' for the Doctor. Which removes so many great candidates, though they might make an exception for Robert Carlyle...
Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddsRichard Grant or Stephen Fry
but i would want the Doctor Grant played in the webisode.
Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddsThis list is just strange. Anthony Stewart Head? He already made quite a prominent guest appearance in new Who so that just doesn't make any sense. Now Richard E Grant would be interesting!
Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddsRichard E Grant has technically played the role before in a Comic Relief/Children In Need special, along with Hugh Grant. I love the idea of Aidan Gillen, TBH, but it'll never happen. Sylvester McCoy has come out and recommended Andrew Sachs I read, too...
Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddsGrant has also played the role in a series of BBC Flash-based web-movies directly before Eccleston was cast (the cartoon version is very faithful to his own appearance).
Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddsGOt four for you straight away: Andrew Lincoln, Rufus Sewell, Toby Stephens and Johnny Lee Miller. Surprised no-one's considered them so far...
Re: The next Doctor Who: bookies reveal oddshttp://www.denofgeek.com/television/103938/steven_moffat_for_doctor_who_movie.html
so says mr moffat that the doctor should be about 40... richard e grant and nesbitt would be great additions, but at the same time would they give up what the have elsewhere? out of the list i hope Chiwetel Ejiofor or Aiden Gillen get the nod. |
