Confirmed: David Tennant quitting Doctor Who in 2009
Simon Brew
David Tennant has ended the speculation, and admitted he's leaving Doctor Who behind next year...
Putting an end to the rampant speculation that’s been surrounding his future in the Tardis, David Tennant has now confirmed that he’ll be quitting as Doctor Who in 2009. That means that he’ll be filming the special episodes planned for next year, and once this Christmas’ The Next Doctor is shown, he’ll have four more turns at the controls of the Tardis before handing them over to someone else. The last of his episodes will be shown in early 2010.
Tennant made the announcement on the eve of his victory at this evening’s National Television Awards. He was quoted as saying that “I’ve had the most brilliant, bewildering and life-changing time working on Doctor Who. I have loved every day of it. It would be very easy to cling on to the Tardis console for ever and I fear that if I don’t take a deep breath and make the decision to move on now, then I simply never will.”
This makes Steven Moffat’s job for season five all the more challenging. Moffat, who is in charge of the show’s next full season in 2010, must now find 13 episodes, a new assistant and a new Doctor.
Let the betting begin…

Re: Confirmed: David Tennant quitting Doctor Who in 2009Fu*k it. I'm going down the bookies tomorrow and sticking a tenner on Idris Elba.
Re: Confirmed: David Tennant quitting Doctor Who in 2009This changes every thing. I is said Moffat has some scripts. People have said that Patrick Stewart was going to make an appearance. Moffat had written River Song to be used durring the first Moffat season. So much of the 2010 season was based on Tennet staying.
that's it we americans have invaded for far less. After a little water boarding we will see what DT says about 2010, (ok thats a joke)
thanks David | |

Re: Confirmed: David Tennant quitting Doctor Who in 2009The media is doing the usual 'who could be the new doctor?' speculation. All the usual suspects, just waiting for the suggestion that is should be a lady and played by Johanna Lumley. Wonder how they'll handle the River Song issue, or indeed if they will handle it at all...
Re: Confirmed: David Tennant quitting Doctor Who in 2009Sad news as Tennant has had a fantastic ride in the Tardis Always wanted to see Richard E Grant take the controls myself, but I'm not sure it would work anymore. I'm just glad I don't have to cast it!
Re: Confirmed: David Tennant quitting Doctor Who in 2009No idea who should be the next Doctor, but I do know we should all take our hats off to David. In my opinion, he has been the most entertaining Doctor to date. Thanks DT!
Re: Confirmed: David Tennant quitting Doctor Who in 2009For my part, I'll be content to wait and be surprised. On a personal note, a female Doctor would be a blast - would I be crazy to suggest Sarah Sutton for the part? She's had a little experience with the show. And if there was ever a Time Crash Pt II, she and Pete would rock the house! |
