Disney working on Wreck-It Ralph 2

Wreck-It Ralph 2 is being developed at Disney, it's now been revealed...

Given that director Rich Moore and his team were very open to the idea of a Wreck-It Ralph sequel around the time of the film's original release, it's been pretty widely assumed that one's on the stove at Disney somewhere. After all, Wreck-It Ralph took nearly $500m worldwide at the cinema box office, and garnered generally very positive reviews.

Walt Disney Animation Studios, however, is hardly known for its sequels. You have to go back to The Rescuers Down Under for the only one on its official line of animated movies (trivia time: Mike Gabriel co-directed The Rescuers Down Under, and was art director on Wreck-It Ralph). However, rumours now persist that we're getting a Frozen 2 as well, so there may be changes afoot.

Right now thought, the first tangible sign that Wreck-It Ralph 2 is on the way has come from composer Henry Jackman. In an interview with him, Collider asked if he'd heard news of a Wreck-It Ralph 2. His answer? "I did, to be honest with you. I can’t tell you more, not because I’m being coy, but I believe that it is officially on the cards. I don’t know any more other than a story is indeed being written".

Well, that's more than we officially knew before. The interesting question is who's writing it? Jennifer Lee co-wrote the first, along with Phil Johnston. Lee then went on to pen and co-direct Frozen, and that's a rollercoaster she's only just beginning to step off. Is she back on Ralph duties? Time will tell. But it seems, one way or another, Wreck-It Ralph 2 is edging closer...

Who makes all the ropey straight to DVD sequels then? (Lion King, Brother Bear, Tarzan, Mulan etc.)

Yay! More Ralph & Vanellope! and Fix-it Felix! and Sour Bill!

and Aladdin 2+3.... *Shudders*

They're released by Disney Home Entertainment.

Fantastic. Wreck it Ralph was brilliant, a sequel will be very welcome

Really enjoyed the Wreck it Ralph. Would really like a sequel

And they used to be animated by their Television department!

Excellent, loved the first and there's so much more video gaming ground left to cover. Bring it on.

Ugh. Just no. I know I'm in the minority here, but I really didn't like the first one. It had a lot of promise in the first half what with all the game references (though it would have been nice to have seen some more interesting characters than purely 80's and 90's ones. We get it, you like retro gaming), but in the second half just devolved into a mawkish, overly sentimental, entirely saccharine bore-fest.

The first had VERY limited appeal beyond the retro game references and opening 20 minutes of fun. It was a mess of colliding sub plots with intensely annoying characters. If there is more of the same I don't want to see it.

Luckely Disney changed it strategy and have desided that they won't make any of those "sequels" again. On the other hand Toy Story 2 was originally a direct-to-video release, and that worked out great.

Yes, that's correct.
The Aladdin movies for example opens (Jafar's Revenge) and closes (King of Thieves) the television series.
The Atlantis sequel Milo's Return is actually a re-edit of the first couple of TV episodes before the axed the project. And rightly so.
The third or sidequel of the Lion King was actually pretty funny, and the first sequel was actually rather good and had original songs by the likes of Tina Turner.

Uh, you call taking $471million at the box office "VERY limited appeal"? Wow! What do you call a success?

Lion King threquel aka of Mystery Serengeti Theatre 3000 :D

They could go really Meta with it and have a second Wreck-It-Ralph game WITHIN the film where a different/new Ralph is actually the hero of his game (like Donkey Kong switching from villain to hero). This second Ralph could be a bit of a dick, and game-swapping antics ensue. There could even be a Diddy Kong character called Wreck-it-Rolf.

Please get Venellope and Mario in his kart to race :3
