UPDATED: Over $2m raised in less than a day, kickstarting new Veronica Mars film!

UPDATE: It took half a day to raise the $2m. Current total? $2.5m and rising...

This, friends, may well be the way forward for non-blockbuster movies in the future. Having attempted to get a Veronica Mars movie greenlit in Hollywood following the ending of the show a few years back, Rob Thomas has taken to Kickstarter.

The Veronica Mars creator wrote that "Warner Bros. wasn’t convinced there was enough interest to warrant a major studio-sized movie about Veronica and the project never got off the ground", with regards to his previous attempt to get the film moving. Hence, he's now set up a Kickstarter campaign, which might just be the highest profile movie project to date to use the crowdfunding service.

Thomas is looking to raise $2m, and at the time of writing, he's nearly half way to his goal, with thousands of people chipping in to fund the new film. It seems unlikely that it won't now hit its goal, which leads to the exciting prospect of Veronica Mars back on our screens by March 2014.

We'll keep you posted on this, and you can donate to the film right here. We have...

it's almost half done before day 1 is over.

This doesn't seem. It's not fair that fans should have to feed money to the rich TV/Film folk now, then again when the film is released. Hopefully the pledges will demonstrate that there is a big enough fan following, and then when WB commission the film, everyone who donated gets their money back

Agreed - those pledging should get 'points'

Those pledging get all sorts of goodies from scripts to dvd's to walk on parts and most importantly, they get their dream movie made. Never watched it but this working could be huge for geeks and open the floodgates on some amazing projects that a niche market has been gagging for...

no almost about it, it's fully funded... by day one... and still going!

They done it, Dredd 2 next?
Join the 'Make a DREDD sequel" group on facebook, it was started 3 days ago and is at 1000 likes already..

Many of the packages included a digital copy of the film - on day of theatrical release - or a DVD/Blu. Seems pretty fair.

if I contribute, do I still have to pay for a ticket to watch the movie ?

hope this gets going as I am a huge fan

Veronica mars. What a joke
