James Mangold: Wolverine 2 after X-Men: Apocalypse

X-Men Apocalypse will be the next X-Men film to go before the cameras, ahead of The Wolverine's sequel...

Fox is busy at the moment juggling the three different X-Men movies it has in various stages of development. X-Men: Days Of Future Past is nearly done, and is set for release this coming May. Meanwhile, it's already been confirmed that a direct sequel to that - X-Men: Apocalypse - is set for release in 2016, that Bryan Singer is returning to direct.

So where does that leave The Wolverine's sequel? Well, director James Mangold - who made the last Wolverine feature and will be back for the next one - was asked that very question on Twitter. And he's now confirmed that X-Men: Apocalypse will be heading into production first. "We are figuring it all out", he wrote. "At the moment, I'm shooting the next #Wolverine after #XmenApocalypse".

The would point towards  a release date potentially around 2017 for The Wolverine 2/The Wolverine 3 (depending on whether you count X-Men Origins: Wolverine towards the total). That'd be four years after the last film.

Of course, Fox could release two X-Men movies in the same year, but that's highly unlikely. It's even more unlikely that it could turn The Wolverine 2/The Wolverine 3 (as previously discussed) around for the summer of 2015.

We'll keep you posted...

Wow, Hugh Jackman will be almost 50. I hope Wolverine's healing factor can also keep Jackman looking young.

fox is legendary for giving directors stupid timescales and fixed release dates. if they gave a 2015 release date it wouldn't surprise me

Getting a bit tired of announcements so far in advance! DoFP isn't out yet and they've already told us about Apocalypse and Wolvie 2 - no surprises anymore!

Judging by what he has been saying of late, it's virtually confirmed that Hugh Jackman's last appearance as Wolverine will be in The Wolverine 2, since Apocalypse is focused primarily on the First Class ensemble. Hopefully, Mangold's sequel will be a fitting send-off for the character and will rejuvenate the franchise in terms of its lead figures as a result.

I agree, I think Hugh has done a fantastic job as The Wolverine to date and I feel sorry for the person who has to pick up the claws after him. As long as they do a fitting send off for Hugh's version of the Wolverine I will be very happy!

Your headline is mistaken. There have already been two Wolverine films, so the next one would be Wolverine 3, not 2.

Old Man Logan?

Yeah, I get a bit annoyed with them trying to pretend that Wolverine Origins doesn't exist. Yes, it was rubbish, but if it didn't exist, you can refund my money

Old Man Logan...exactly what I'm thinking!

"X-Men Origins: Wolverine" exists and was actually good and for some of us it was arguably better than The Wolverine. Just to clear that up.

So many marvel characters in that story that aren't under fox though... But if they can adapt it right, it can be the best of the xmen movies.

I liked it, simply because I did not know deadpool at the time. Now...

I've been doing a X-Men movie rewatch in the following order:
1. X-Men Origins: Wolverine
2. X-Men
3. X-Men 2 or X2 or X-Men United, what is the correct title of this movie anyway?
4. X-Men: The Last Stand
5. X-Men: First Class
6. The Wolverine
I have to say if you put Origins first then you have that done and over with and it actually fits. Victor is actually never called Sabretooth (or I have missed it) so the X-Men Sabretooth could be considerd another guy. Same goes for the diamond mutant girl that is credited as Emma Frost. Professor X can walk in this movie, like in the flash back at the beginning of Last Stand. Now let's hope Days of Future Past gives a solution for the crippled Charles at the end of First Class which was in the '60s while we see him walking in the '80s set Origins and Last Stand flashback.

Your right but we can dream. Jackman as that knowing weariness about him now that would be perfect. Plus he's one of the actors left that has the clout with the studios, so he could get a 15 certificate and so we would see some of the books the extremes on the screen.

While we're dreaming, imagine Logan and a blind old Hawkeye/Jeremy Renner pulling up to a toll bridge manned by Antboy, played by

Is FOX not juggling with 4 X-Men movies? I tought they were also working on a X-Force movie.

Yeah but who could play Ca-

It'll definitely be The Wolverine 2, there WAS NO other Wolverine film. Nope, definitely didn't happen.

cant we get an action packed r-movie this time?

Said it before and I'll say it again: Origins: Wolverine was a brilliant solo film, and it's just a shame they didn't continue the format for other characters.

Will Yun Lee shouldn't have played Harada. He should have played Lord Deathstrike.
