The Rover, starring Guy Pearce: first trailer
It's a promising post-apocalyptic crime thriller starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson. Here's the first trailer for The Rover...
In 2010, David Michod brought us Animal Kingdom - a brutal and gripping drama about an Australian crime family and a teenager's attempts to escape its clutches. It was a superbly acted and observed film, which Michod spent several years writing and perfecting. In fact, we liked Animal Kingdom so much, it made the number one spot in our list of underrated films of 2010.
Four years on, and Michod's back with his second feature, The Rover. Set in a post-apocalyptic, near-future Australia, it stars Guy Pearce (who was great in Animal Kingdom, incidentally) as a traveller whose car is stolen by a gang of vicious criminals, who also leave a seriously injured member of their own group (that'd be Robert Pattinson) in the process. Together, they head off to hunt the gang down.
Comparisons with Mad Max are inevitable, but Michod's sure to bring his own grim quality to The Rover, which he describes as "chillingly authentic and menacing". Disappointingly, the title doesn't refer to a defunct marque of car from the UK. We'd have quite liked to have seen Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson driving around, grim faced, in a Rover Tomcat.
The Rover debuts at Cannes this year, along with David Cronenberg's Maps To The Stars, and Ryan Gosling's directorial debut Lost River.
The Rover is out on the 13th June in the US. When we get a UK release date, we'll be sure to let you know.
