The lead human character in The Muppets 2 might just be played by Ricky Gervais...

Having had his cameo in The Muppets end up on the cutting room floor, Ricky Gervais may have thought that his Muppet moment had passed. However, as The Muppets 2 (or whatever it ends up being called) prepares for production in early 2013, a new piece of casting news has popped up, which suggests that Ricky Gervais is set for a much bigger role this time around.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gervais is in line for one of the starring roles in The Muppets sequel, joining a cast that thus far includes Modern Family’s Ty Burrell. Gervais will reportedly by the lead human character in the film, although no further details have been revealed about the role thus far.

James Bobin is directing The Muppets sequel, having penned the script for it with Nicholas Stoller.

Bollocks. This film just went from 'highly anticipated' to 'might catch it on Channel 5 one day'.

I've never been interested in the Muppets before but if Gervais is in it, I might actually consider watching it.

I didn't think it was possible to make me not want to see a Muppet movie. Seeing Ricky Gervais in it might do it.

NO. Stop. Leave. Right now. Don't do it.

The thing is I really don't like Ricky Gervais and he can only play Ricky Gervais so this is pretty disappointing news but it's still the Muppets so I'll endure him and hope the rest of the film makes it worth while.

I saw this on another site this morning. When I think of this, I think of David Brent with his guitar, singing in the team bonding session in The Office. Add to this the fact he understands children's material (Flanimals is very successful, and I assume based o the Muppets to some extent, and im actually quite excited for this. The Muppets was brilliant, I think this could be too. It's inspired casting.

A boycott may be in order

Check out Gervais with Elmo on youtube, he's very funny with muppets.

Good Lord, no.

This would be disappointing. I find his writing funny (or at least The Office and Extras) but he's becoming more and more of a dick. I do still have faith in this as The Muppets was so absolutely fantastic but I'd be happier with Ty Burrell as the sole male lead. Gervais's performance with Elmo is great though so hopefully it'll be more like that and less like the abysmal Life's Too Short.

If true, I shall never watch the Muppets, again!

He works with 3 of them!!!
