The Hunger Games news round-up
Lots of news about the upcoming The Hunger Games movies, Catching Fire and Mockingjay...
Production is starting shortly on the second The Hunger Games movie, Catching Fire, with director Francis Lawrence calling the shots this time around (after the helmer of the first film, Gary Ross, opted not to make the second). As you’d expect, the key cast are returning, led by Jennifer Lawrence. But there are quite a few new faces this time around, too.
We already know that Phillip Seymour Hoffman has been officially added to the cast of Catching Fire, and late yesterday is was announced that Amanda Plummer was signing up, too. Plummer, best known for the likes of The Fisher King and Pulp Fiction, is set to play Wiress in the new movie.
Meanwhile, Variety is reporting that Lionsgate is close to casting the role of Finnick Odair. The role was linked to Robert Pattinson at one point, but the apparent frontrunner now is Sam Claflin. We saw Claflin earlier this year in Snow White And The Huntsman. Further casting rumours include linking Melissa Leo with the role of Mags and Tony Shalhoub as Beetee. Jean Malone, meanwhile, is playing the role of Johanna Mason in the film.
Moving onto the final book in The Hunger Games trilogy, Mockingjay, the news broke last week that it’s being split into two films. And, given that Lionsgate wants the first of those in cinemas a year after the release of Catching Fire, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that Francis Lawrence will be directing them. Instead, a report at The Playlist suggests that a new director is being sought. More news on that as we find out more.
For now, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is in cinemas on November 22nd 2013, and the first movie hits DVD and Blu-ray next month.
