Possible titles for The Hobbit Part 3 revealed
Some recent domain name registrations may just have the clues as to what Peter Jackson will be calling his third movie of The Hobbit...
The announcement yesterday that Peter Jackson will indeed be splitting The Hobbit into a third film seems to have a bit of a mixed response. Some seem to have been questioning whether there's enough material to work with, others have been firmly on the side of Peter Jackson.
That debate is set to run until we clap eyes on the final movies, we suspect, but in the interim, there's the small matter of what to call the third film. We know that part one is going by the name The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and that part two is called The Hobbit: There And Back Again. But a bit of work over at Fusible has revealed that a few new domains have been registered by the company that's managing the existing URLs for The Hobbit movies.
So, the domains that have been picked up are:
desolationofsmaug.com
riddlesindark.com
thedesolationofsmaug.com
thehobbitdesolationofsmaug.com
thehobbitriddlesindark.com
thehobbitthedesolationofsmaug.com
thehobbittheriddlesinthedark.com
theriddlesinthedark.com
Which points to one of two titles. The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, and The Hobbit: The Riddles In The Dark.
Of course, the domains may yet be for something unrelated. But it's looking unlikely that's the case, in the light of yesterday's announcement. When the new title is confirmed, we'll let you know...

I'm guessing that part one will go up until Beorn's domain or maybe a bit after, part two will deal with Bilbo and the Dwarves' journeys through Mirkwood as well as Gandalf's battle with the Necromancer, and the third will go from Lake Town to everything dealing with Smaug. If this theory pans out, The Desolation of Smaug would fit. That's not to say that I'm happy about this development, but whatever.
Part 3 should be called 'There and Back Again' and they should find a new title for Part 2.
Part 2 is the one that needs a new title as the current one doesn't fit the content of the movie. They don't get back in that one. So my best guess.
Part 1: An unexpected journey
Part 2: Riddles in the dark
Part 3: There and back again.
I guess that most people will see this as a cynical attempt to make more money, but this seems to be coming from Jackson not the studio.
We all know that he likes to film way more that ends up in the final cut, just look at the extended versions of LOTR. I get the feeling that he's got so much quality footage this time that he sees an opportunity that with a little more filming he'll get three movies that he's happy with. They may still have the sets, crew and studios probably still ready to use (maybe) as they are stil in post production and are geard up for call backs if required.
I think I trust Jackson on this one, some of his other films have had their weaknesses but the LOTR trilogy was epic. I truly hope he can pull of that level of work again, he definitely has the passion.
Part 2 should be something like 'going over here for a bit' or 'spending too long doing not very much'. I'm sorry but a lot less happens in the hobbit than any 1 lotr book. I know he's adding a lot too it but this is all about the cash. Plus I don't want 2 empire striks back style cliff hangers to just find out bilbo walks past some more trees.
Sorry, this decision may be spearheaded by Jackson and crew rather than the studio but that's not necessarily a good thing. Just because you can do a thing doesn't mean you should.
The Hobbit really should have been one movie, two at a very hard push. It really doesn't need a trilogy of movies no matter what else is being added. The real story of that world was told in the 3 LOTR and told very well.
It smacks of the 'George Lucas effect' where a creative get's so big that no one edits them or says "No" and we'll end up with a dissapointing result...
Could it even be possible that "There and Back Again" has been dropped entirely, and that the films are now: 1) An Unexpected Journey, 2) Riddles in the Dark and 3) The Desolation of Smaug.?
I'd back that horse.
Makes sense to me.
Clearly it's got to be the renaming of the second film and not the third. 'There And Back Again' cannot work as a title for film 2 as there will be no 'back again'. 'Riddles In The Dark' would be a great title for film 2.
I don't think it'll be called Riddles in the Dark, since that's the name of the chapter Gollum appears in. All signs point to Gollum being in An Unexpected Journey, so Desolation of Smaug seems more likely to me. That said, it's a bit spoilerific for those who haven't read the book. Surely something more subtle like the original two titles would fit better?
That seems super logical, but it would also mean that the first movie won't even get up to the goblins and Gollum. Yikes.
I'll put a sizable bet on that. On the one hand, it would be sad that the book's original subtitle will be lost, but on the other, it sticks out as the odd one.
In my opinion the world is better with more stuff in it. Because if you don't like something, you can just ignore it. One can't ignore what doesn't exist, which would just be selfish to deny what others want. Peter Jackson and many fans like me want and appreciate more. Imagine boycotting a band just because you didn't like their encore song?
I trust Peter Jackson completely on this. He's not fluffing out one thin book; he's taking Tolkien's original material consisting of The Hobbit novel and the Middle Earth appendices to fully flesh out the author's original vision. Bring it on, I say! I can't wait for the epic 6 film blu-ray collection either! :)
The Hobbit: Stretched Thin?
Imagine going to see a band called 'The Hobbit' and what turned up was one original member of the band and 4 intruders who covered a bunch of songs he'd done with a different band. That's how I feel. I love the Hobbit, I love the appendices, and I love the Silmarillion. But the Hobbit is the Hobbit, and I would expect to see that story from a film Called 'The Hobbit!'
Otherwise, just call it 'Tales from Middle Earth' and do what you like with it.
Imagine if Star Wars: A New Hope was actually covering the first three films instead of it's own story!
I think the proper title would be: The Hobbit: "Give me your money"
They got the titles: 'The Unexpected Journey' and 'There and Back Again' from Bilbo's titles for his quest in the Red Book in 'The Lord of the Rings' where there was another title: 'What Happened After' and I thought it could be the title for either a middle movie or a bridge movie. Then I thought about how if the third movie was about the period that Bilbo and the Dwarves came to Esgaroth until the death of Smaug then it will cover how the plot motive changed from attempted burglary to Dragon slaying. This has me wonder, from a cynical angle, if the title for the middle movie to cover that and the studio changing their mind about the number of movies being made could be called: 'The Quest for More Money'.
haha.. The Hobbit: Like Butter Scraped Over Too Much Bread
