Martin Freeman, Sir Ian McKellen, Gollum and more, in new pictures from Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey...

While the summer blockbuster battle continues to rage, with The Amazing Spider-Man the latest to launch, there's the small matter of a collection of major blockbusters arriving at the end of the year. There's a trailer for Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise, imminent. James Bond returns in Skyfall this October. And then there's The Hobbit, which might just turn out to be the biggest of them all.

Peter Jackson is on directing duties again for the two Hobbit films, and the first of them, An Unexpected Journey, is set for release on 26th December in the UK. It's also getting a hefty preview in the next issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine, and as such, a batch of brand new pictures from the film have arrived online.

You can find them below these words, if all has gone to plan. And here's the original piece over at EW.

Cate Blanchett, who for me almost killed fellowship of the ring, i still have to fast forward her part

I so can't wait for this!! The Gandalf picture looks like it could be from "Fellowship" I love the continuity between these films. Peter Jackson, Weta and Co. rock!!!

I have never read the books but i loved the first 3 films and I'm really llooking forward the the 2 films, the years gap will be hell!!

You should read the Hobbit. The LOTR trilogy may or may not be to your taste, but "The Hobbit" is an easier read.

oh Mr Frodo i can see the Shire!.. can't wait.

While you're at it, pick up some of his other children's stories. They are all easy reads and they are permeated by the same charm and imagination as his more famous works.

I disagree - while her voice was a little "low and slow" for my liking, I thought she did a fine job.

I thought she was good in that role. After all, Galadriel was not always a good person - the Silmarillion reveals that she was one of the leaders of the rebellion of the Noldor, hence her enforced banishment to Middle Earth which was only lifted because she forced herself to resist taking the Ring for herself when it came within reach. She should be played as a bit of a two-faced bitch with a sly smile and ten thousand years of resentment. Kate Blanchett was much more appropriate to the part than some whispy teenage fairy. Galadriel kicks ass in the Silmarillion!

I did try to read (or rather listen to the talking book) of LOTR:FOTR, I got through Book 1 and and gave up.

galadriel must add
