The Conjuring 2 gets the green light

Even before The Conjuring is released in cinemas New Line have given the go-ahead for a sequel.

Our very own Sarah Dobbs was very impressed with James Wan's incoming movie The Conjuring, which arrives in UK cinemas at the start of August. You can read her review here. Furthermore, it would seem that the New Line top brass are as well, given that they've given the go-ahead on a sequel even before the first film has gone on release.

Word from early reviews and previews of The Conjuring is very good indeed, and it has the ingredients of a hit. Add that to the fact that James Wan-created horror movies have proven to be quite successful over the years, what with the Saw franchise and the rather excellent Insidious getting a sequel later in the year, and it's little surprise that confidence is so high.

New Line president Toby Emmerich commented that "horror is very much part of the DNA of New Line – Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday The 13th, The Rite and the Final Destination films. This is as good a horror movie as we've ever made... we think it will have great playability".

The sequel - which may well lead into a longer franchise - will follow the further investigation of Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson. Wan will likely be busy with Fast & Furious 7 for a while so whether they'll wait until he has a gap in his schedule or press on with another director remains to be seen.

Hmm. I feel the same about this as I do about The Purge getting a sequel - just mildly disappointed. I loved both films, but at least part of that was because they were new ideas, and I didn't know what to expect. Can't imagine a Part II of either being much cop. Oh well.
