Steven Spielberg to direct The BFG
Steven Spielberg is set to bring a new take on Roald Dahl's The BFG to the big screen...
Kathleen Kennedy reported back in 2012 that a live action adaptation of Roald Dahl's The BFG was being worked on and nearly ready to shoot, and seemingly the main hurdle to the production starting was the lack of a director. Well, they've found one. Quite a good one too: Steven Spielberg has confirmed that it will be his next big project with production expected to begin in early 2015. This gives him the flexibility of tackling a smaller project in the meantime should he fancy it.
The plot of the book is one many of you will be familiar with, with the BFG a giant who teams up with a girl called Sophie to stop far nastier giants. And what's interesting here is that the notoriously picky Roald Dahl estate - itself an extension, of course, of the ethos of the notoriously picky Roald Dahl - has allowed a further feature to be made (an animated version had previously been produced).
E.T. writer Melissa Mathison has penned the screenplay and Frank Marshall, John Madden and Michael Siegel are serving as executive producers. With what is essentially an all star team of Amblin Entertainment working on such a classic book, it's hard not to get excited for this.
