Scarlett Johansson: "strong female characters in Avengers 2"

Marvel and Joss Whedon are lining up "some pretty strong female characters" for Avengers 2, it seems...

With Captain America: The Winter Soldier beginning its worldwide rollout this week, the cast and crew of the film have been on promotional duties. Scarlett Johansson, who's moving straight onto Avengers: Age Of Ultron once she's done press for Captain America 2, has been asked about Joss Whedon's Avengers follow-up, as you might expect.

When chatting to Showbiz 411, the issue of strong female characters in comic book movies came up. Johansson noted straight away that at the film's premiere, fans came up dressed as many potential future Marvel comic book movie heroes. "There was a Ms Marvel, there was a Wasp and a lot of Black Widows out there", she noted, adding that "one thing I got from all of them is that there is space... they're excited to see the female represented in these movies. I think Marvel's kind of heard that note and you'll see some pretty strong female characters in Avengers 2 coming up".

Ah, but which ones? We know about Black Widow, and we know about Elizabeth Olsen playing Scarlet Witch too. Cobie Smulders is back too. But beyond that? Maybe there are a few surprises that Joss Whedon and his team are yet to reveal...

More on Avengers: Age Of Ultron as we hear it.

I think you mean Squirre Girl Yes.

"They're excited to see the female represented in these movies"?
She makes 'female' sound like a rare species of animal.

People really need to stop using it as a noun when talking about people.

Maybe if there WERE more representation, seeing "the female represented" wouldn't be an occurrence so worth mentioning. We're 51% of the population, not sparkly unicorns, AND YET...

I fully agree, don't get me wrong. I just wish she'd said "women" instead.
That's what we have the word for after all.

I want all the female superheroes to team up, Expendables-style, to do battle against their greatest foe and a true blight on the face of civilisation = the phrase 'strong female character'.

The way Hollywood scripts are, they would need to be rescued by a man or merely serve as foils for a man to 'find himself' and win the day.

Or strip off like Carol Marcus. Yeah I'm sure that women all over would strip off and let their boss watch, and just tell them off. It's pathetic that scene.

Yeah, it should really be 'strong character, female' instead.

Better keep Stephen Moffat away from the MCU, then...

I want this to happen.

She can babysit for luke and Jessica

It's even more frustrating when you consider Whedon's Equality Now speech was seven years ago...

some could be girls, just saying.

Can we have some strong male ones too please?

The "female" characters in these movies are basically men with tits or some high school nerd's ideal of a "strong" woman character. Bet they'll be basically the same character.

Joss Whedon doing a movie with strong female characters? that seems a little far fetched to me, i mean he's never done that before....

Guess it depends where you draw the line.

A nice improvement from having zero female characters in the first Avengers. She served absolutely no use in that film.

I really hope you're being sarcastic. For a start she was the one who got Bruce Banner to help, and then she managed to beat Loki at his own game in order to reveal his plan. Also she's the one that closes the portal...
