Avengers 2, and a Black Widow solo film

Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow in Iron Man 2

Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow is getting a "very big" role in Avengers 2, and a possible standalone film...

Now shooting in South Africa is Marvel's eagerly-awaited Avengers: Age Of Ultron, which Joss Whedon is returning to direct. Also returning for that film is Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, who will next be seen in Captain Amerca: The Winter Soldier. That's out in the UK next month.

Chatting to Total Film, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has revealed that plans are afoot for the character of Black Widow, too. Describing the character's role in The Avengers sequel as "very big", he added that "we learn more about her past and learn more about where she came from and how she became in that film. The notion of exploring that even further in her own film would be great, and we have some development work with that".

Feige added that "we wanted Cap and really the entire cinematic universe to be very different at the end of Winter Soldier than it is at the beginning. Therefore when we meet the Avengers at the top of Age Of Ultron, it's a very different landscape than we left them at the end of the last film".

Add a Black Widow movie then to the list of further projects that Marvel Studios is developing. Where it sits in the queue with the new Hulk film, Doctor Strange, and sequels to other movies, remains to be seen. Our guess is we may have a wait on our hands.

The new issue of Total Film is on sale now.

Zzzzzz

Solo BW would have to be pretty dark to work, otherwise it might come off as an 'Ogle Scarlett Johansson in a bodysuit for 90 minutes' knock-off. I could imagine a really good Widow film with Catherine Breillat or Gaspar Noe at the helm.

Ugh. This could be such a good movie, but it's not hard to guess exactly how it'll turn out. Something that will force BW to confront her past when she's not ankle deep in some unnecessary subplot love interest.

This could be a proper spy movie. My mind instantly jumped to the first Bourne movie. The seedier, grittier underbelly of Europe. I think this film should remind viewers that Black Widow isn't a particularly pleasant human being, and has the potential to be the darkest character of the franchise so far. Not everybody needs to be made into a superhero in shining armour.

No love interest subplot. No overcoming her past cliché. I know we're all still attempting to separate ourselves from the moody seriousness of the Nolan trilogy with these Marvel movies, but a Widow movie is the perfect example of a movie that could be dark and work.

Sounds promising. After a lame intro in IM2 I actually thought she was pretty underrated in Avengers and has great potential. Glad to see Whedon is doing right by her in the sequel given that she was originally just the token female Avenger.

You make ogle Scarlett Johansson in a bodysuit sound like a bad thing

Four words: THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT (written by that IRON MAN THREE guy, Shane Black). Not every spy movie has to be a dour, superserious affair. Especially if this one has the Marvel logo in front looking to drag in all kinds of audiences.

Besides, nice try, Marvel, but with ScarJo headlining LUCY for Luc Besson (sort of a LA FEMME NIKITA, only with the main character accidentally taking a drug that gives her nigh-superpowers), I see zero chances of both projects co-existing without general audiences making the inevitable comparisons.

Quick question : Do Marvel have any plans to introduce Adam Warlock? If they are heading for an Infinity Gauntlet storyline, they pretty much need him, and there aren't any rights issues with the character. Do you think he will turn up in Doctor Strange or something?

Watch the Thor 2 mid-credits scene

Doh! :D

I'd love to see a Black Widow film. Seeing Scarlett in tight leather is the stuff wet dreams are made of.

With the Collector? Seen it....did I miss something?

C'mon, who wouldn't watch this.......?

Yeah there's a big cocoon in his collection... Could be a throwaway... Then again...

Oooooo...hadn't spotted that one

YES. That would be awesome! Fantastic job with the fictional poster if this was your work.

If it was well written, why would it have to come off like that? I think it could have the potential to be a great spy movie. Whether people want to see the character for their appearance only is up to them. Real fans of Marvel will be able to appreciate it beyond that.

He has or is the soul gem, right?

I can dig it

"You and I remember Budapest very differently."

Excellent poster, bud! :)

"how she became in that film"? Me fail English? That's unpossible.

Usually, although not always. He is kinda a space hippy wizard type character

I wish. I just stole if off google images. Looks awesome though

Gotcha

Definitely would like a Black Widow film, especially given how stupidly desolate the female-superhero landscape is. Also, a Ms Marvel independent film, please, Marvel. I would suggest Wonder Woman too, but DC seem to think she also needs to be introduced alongside Superman first, as Black Widow was in Iron Man.

hey cool

Hope everything works out and Marvel moves a Black Widow film into production.I really enjoy the characters ruthless efficiency and emotional displacement. She's an unusually immoral superheroine and accomplished killer,so there's plenty of mystery for story potential.Surely,it must be inevitable considering Scarlett's clout in Hollywood that they have to make a stand alone movie with the character.Still needs a quality writer to do the character and actress justice though.

Ms Marvel sure but Black widow's not much of a heavyweight to have her own movie. Wouldnt mind also seeing Jessica Drew on the big screen since she's had her share of the limelight in comics in recent years. If they do decide to spend on BW the movie should have a unique look/motif to differentiate from all the dude centric super hero movies. Never really agreed with Scarjo being cast as BW, thought the role should have gone to someone more exotic looking like Olga Kurlenko or the like.

I've heard that a BW film has been in development since 2008 with a script supposedly written in 2010. So it's clearly still in development which is either a good sign or a bad sign.

amoral actually

It is distinctly peculiar to debate right and wrong when using words like amorality or immorality,i would think.Interested to note amorality apparently originated from Robert Louis Stephensons ' writing.Thanks.

Give it to Joss and he'd do it right.

I'd like to think that "Amerca" was deliberate.

It's still rumoured that the inbetween movie (between Batman vs Superman and Justice League) will be the Wonder Woman solo which would make sense with Gal's three-movie contract. Of course, that was meant to be released in 2016 with Justice League in 2017, but that may not happen with Batman vs Superman having been pushed back to then.

I agree, but I kinda wish they'd introduce her in her own movie before having her debut in a Superman/Batman film, as if like a 'taste-test'. It is great that Wonder Woman will finally get a 21st Century film, I just hope its good!

BUDAPEST ALL THE WAY! We all wanna know what happened but just a movie of Black Widow being awesome would be brilliant.
