Thomas Kretschmann cast as 'major villain' in Avengers 2

James Spader has coming in the villain stakes for Avengers: Age Of Ultron, as Thomas Kretschmann joins the cast of Joss Whedon's film...

Weeks after it was rumoured he was joining the cast, Thomas Kretschmann - currently starring in NBC's Dracula TV show as Abraham van Helsing - has now apparently signed up for Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age Of Ultron. And it sounds like he's got a pretty important role.

Kretschmann is set to play Baron Wolfgang von Strucker in the Avengers sequel, who is set to sit alongside James Spader's Ultron as one of the foes in the new film. His role is being described as that of a 'major villain'.

Furthermore, The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Kretschmann has - in the current Marvel tradition - signed up for multiple films.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron is set to go before the cameras this year, for release in summer 2015.

Is HYDRA coming?!

And if so, what is their connection to Ultron?

Well, if Hank Pym didn't create Ultron in this universe, someone needs to.

Best suit of the year!

"Has coming?"

Autocorrect troubling you maybe?

He was good in King kong

From news stories I read, it's Stark that creates Ultron

oh, yeah, Max from Season 2 of 24.

Never realised how much of a crazy hard worker this guy is - check out his IMDb entry. He's played Dracula and van Helsing in the space of two years!

I looked him up too. Mostly 3rd reich stuff but he works hard! Hail Hydra!

That would tap in neatly with the way his suits and tech have evolved over the films.

Plus I read somewhere, possibly incorrectly, that Downey Jnr is contracted to play just Tony Stark, not Iron Man.

He did have the arc reactor taken out, so maybe he promised Pepper he wouldn't get in the suit and the Iron Man will just be War Machine. But if Jarvis becomes Ultron, Tony will feel terrible and it will be hard to keep him from "suiting up."

AoS - focused entirely around Extremis
Iron Man 3 - ends with Pepper afflicted with Extremis and then "fixed". Tony also fixes himself in a way that was previously impossible. His final narration hints that he IS Iron Man.
Iron Man in comics - the suit eventually is an extremis tech which is embedded in Stark's body. This will require far more blended CGI, but lets Stark also spend a lot of time "out of the suit" while still able to be "Iron Man"

My plot prediction: Jarvis becomes ultron when Tony no longer needs him (the extremis suit in the comics doesn't require the AI as it enhances Tony's own neurological processes). Whether this is something Tony does by accident or through neglect or the actions of Dr. Struckner? We get some degree of exploration of Extremis Iron Man in the avengers 2, but it's mostly a set up for Iron Man 4.

It is something that always amuses me when people say that he cannot be Iron man anymore because he had the Reactor removed.......yet no one questions how Rhodes uses War Machine without one himself :)
