Joss Whedon on The Avengers 2 and Hulk rumours
Recent rumours about where The Avengers 2 will be heading have been nixed by Joss Whedon...
You may recall a week or two ago that a rather sizeable rumour started doing the rounds, regarding Marvel's plans for The Avengers 2, and how that might lead to a standlone Planet Hulk movie. The full rumours are outlined here, if you want to check them out.
Before you do so, you may want to consider this though: Joss Whedon has called them nonsense.
It was IGN that put the question to Whedon in a recent interview with the man, and he kept his response really quite short and to the point. "Well I'm not really supposed to comment", said Whedon, "but no, that's nonsense".
Joss Whedon already has his outline for The Avengers 2 in place, and you'd suspect that were there any truth to the rumour, he might just do a usual no comment-style response. To rule it out completely? That suggests that the Planet Hulk storyline might just be one worth crossing off the list.

Oh well. I do hope The Hulk has a bigger role to play in the future. He deserves another solo film, perhaps with Red Hulk or The Leader as the villian.
There've been two Hulk movies. I don't need another one.
I'd like a Hulk movie where he gets some lines to speak, because half his personality is lost by keeping him virtually wordless. Is it some kind of hangover from the old TV show that they keep his dialog to a minimum? In the comic books there was no shutting him up.
But in fairness, neither has really nailed the Jekyll/Hyde aspect that inspired the comics in the first place. The Hulk AS Hulk should be not just an antihero, but also the villain - especially in a standalone Hulk movie. Banner doesn't spend his time hiding in 3rd world countries avoiding stress because he trusts the Hulk to do the right thing...
It doesn't mean that the Hulk has to be a 'deliberate' villain. But take the 2nd Hulk film - the key scene in the film, where the Hulk nearly kills Banner's girlfriend, was brushed over as a flashback, with no real equivalent during the film's main plot. The Hulk in the comics holds a lot of animosity towards Banner, and characters who try to appeal to Banner when he's in Hulk mode tend to get the 'Banner? Hulk HATES Banner! [smash]' response, with the rare exception when they agree to cut a deal and work together against a mutual enemy (as in Planet Hulk where both Hulk and Banner are equally pissed at being betrayed by Stark et al).
There's still room for a film that places a lot more emphasis on the battle between Hulk and Banner (in the Avengers they're again tied together by a common enemy - by taking that enemy away, or giving a less all-destructive outside threat, you could still plausibly have a Hulk v Banner story).
Hulk + a human or humans. Hulk smashes while the humans do the intellectual heavy lifting. Great opportunity to bring back Johanssen & Renner, flesh Hawkeye's character out and contain the Hulk in a story that doesn't require too much dialogue.
If anything, Avengers has shown that The Hulk is best used strategically.
Yes. A Professor Hulk movie where he has the strength of Hulk and the intelligence of Banner. I'm here for that.
Yes and if its the leader and red hulk, so much the better. A mastermind and a goon team up against a mastermind (banner) and a goon (hulk) that hate each other. And they finally shake hands and share milkshakes and smash bad guys. I would love to see Red, and being Ross it would close up a trilogy. The first 2 were flawed, Incredible Hulk was fine to me, though im sure others disagree, but Hulk was boooooring. This could make up for all that. No planet hulk. Bruce Banner of Mars will flop. Besides the cartoon was great. And if there's never a cinematic Civil War then I hope they at least make an animated one, ditto AvX.
I have to confess that the Hulk is my least favorite of the Avengers, so much so that I can't really read everything you wrote about him there.
I think there are good reasons why neither Hulk movie was very satisfying, whereas the movie for every other Avenger hit right off.
... Incidentally, I say this as someone who actually sat through both of the Hulk movies. I can't really remember much about them now.
To me, the whole Professor Hulk thing turned him into just another superhero. Some of the stories were pretty good, though.
I get that, I really do. To ME, it put a whole new spin on the Hulk though. No longer was he running from town to town trying not to Hulk out on everyone. He was part of the Pantheon, he was the idealized version of himself. For me, those were cool stories to read, especially Incredible Hulk #400. But I do agree that he should talk more than a grunt or a roar in future cinematic showings.
Pure speculation on my part but I sUspect that the guardians of the galaxy will feature korvac and the finale will find him ascending to pseudo god-like status and them chasing him back into the 21st century and avengers 2 will thus feature the Michael saga. This means we could get mar-vell /thanos too. Such was scribed in classic avengers leading up to volume 1 175. The encounter with ultron and the convent in the comic then was a corker as was the episode with graviton as the avengers followed the clues to Michael. Having mar-vell would also pave the way for the emergence of miss marvell too. So the next best guess is that Thanos and the infinity gauntlet will predominate in the 3rd.
They FINALLY got the Hulk totally right in the Avengers film. And while i think doing a stand alone Hulk movie is much more difficult then most, the public is practically begging for a solo movie with THIS hulk/ruffalo. So it is pretty obvious that we will get one after Avengers 2. I would guestimate around 2017, just before a third Avengers movie, most likely.
I gotta admit, it would be pretty Epic to see Hulk vs Red Hulk smash it out!!! There are a nice handful of villians you could put in a Hulk movie though. The leader would be ok but you would also need a powerhouse that he is most likely controlling in the movie, wether it be Red Hulk, Rhino or some other monster sized freak.
I am a huge Mark Ruffalo fan, and agree that between his portrayal and Joss Whedon's writing and direction, it turned out very well.
