George Clooney looks set to join the cast of Brad Bird’s secretive new science fiction movie…

Last week, the name of Brad Bird – not unreasonably – got sucked into the speculation surrounding the director’s chair of Star Wars: Episode VII. As it turns out, the man who brought us The Incredibles, The Iron Giant, Ratatouille and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol might just have something more interesting up his sleeve.

Bird, whose long-cherish 1906 project (about the San Francisco earthquake of the same year) seems stuck on the lauchpad, is putting together Tesla (a working title). It’s based on a script penned by Damon Lindelof and Jeff Jensen, and it’s apparently about a man on a search for aliens on Earth. Comparisons are already being drawn with Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.

Currently in discussions to star in Tesla is George Clooney, a man with a fairly jam-packed slate of projects at the moment. Given the veil of secrecy currently drawn over Bird’s new film, we’ve no idea just what his role will entail. But any new Brad Bird film instantly gets our attention. Tesla, or whatever it ends up being called, will do well to get to cinemas before 2014, though.

The Hollywood Reporter has a little more on the story, here. And as we hear more, we’ll let you know…

I think there should be more alternative history stuff about Tesla. He's such a fascinating character with so many ways to interpret him and his life which could lead to great stories.

If Bird is going for a CEotTK vibe then that alone would draw me in.

Excuse me, there is PLENTY interesting about the new Star Wars films. Anyways, glad to hear about this project, should be great.
