Tatooine being recreated for Star Wars: Episode VII
It has been revealed that a Tatooine set will be built in Morocco for Star Wars: Episode VII...
It has been known for some time that the new Star Wars trilogy was looking back to the original trilogy for inspiration rather than the prequels. And whilst it's unlikely that the new films will rely on practical effects as much as the original collection, there's still nonetheless a clear push towards more physical work over computer trickery.
Evidence of this can be found in the latest reports from the production, which state that JJ Abrams is looking to rebuild and recreate Tatooine in Morocco. Tatooine was of course featured in the prequels, however much of it was digitally rendered, never putting across the sense that it was a lived in world in the same manner as A New Hope.
At this point there's little indication of which desert in Morocco will be used (and in truth, we're no experts on Moroccan deserts), but the recreation is said to be extensive.
Production is underway on Star Wars: Episode VII now, with its release earmarked for December 18th 2015.
